How the heck do you edit the XFConfig file? I did the <CTRL> <ALT> <F1> and can't edit the file. I'm familiar with nano. |

i like pico, but it's not in this version of LINUX. Use a util called vi and it's used like this: vi /etc/X11/XFree86-4 Once in it, you can probably figured it out hit i to enter edit mode change it then do a :w <ENTER> that will save your work then do a :q <ENTER> that will quit vi |

also if you really want to learn how to use vi you can run vimtutor I really is nice to know vi as it is included in almost every unix variant ever. |

I ran enough of the tutor to get the hang of vi. Exactly what file name do I edit? In one spot it says it's the XFConfig-4 ... **NOTE** If you have an nForce chipset or any nVidia card, before running the command below, you may want to edit /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 and add Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV" # This is only if attaching to a TV.** For more options, please see: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux ... README.txt And in another, it says... If you have the system hooked up to a TV, then **ENSURE** that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 contains: HorizSync "30 - 50" VertRefresh "60" And in the above post... Use a util called vi and it's used like this: vi /etc/X11/XFree86-4 Please let me know if the two files are unique or is there a typo in the instructions? The XFConfig-4 file is empty. |

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and never forget that bash has tab completion, so if you're not sure of a filename, but you know the first few letters you can hit tab and it will complete it for you if there is more than one file that matches those letters it will beep, but if you hit tab agian it will list them. |

Thanks Xsecrets but now I can't get it to save the new line. I'm using the wq command in vi but when it tries to restart I get a box that says "I cannot start the X server .... When I go back to the XF86Config file, the old setting are there! Where exactly do I put this command? |

are you editing the file as root? if you are logged in as a normal user or as mythtv it will not work, because they do not have rights to modify the file. |

I'm in as root. Do you remember exactly where the line goes? The XFree link says to put it in the device section. Is that right? |

fixed! I had to do a complete re-install and enter the line correctly the first time and it worked fine. There may have been an easier way but KnoppMyth loads so fast it was just easier and quicker to instal it again. |
