Post subject:  Network Problems after Autoinstall

hello,

i already searched the forum for a clue and found none... :(
my problem is, when i switch on my newly installed knoppmythbox i cannot acces the internet from other computers connected to the (hardware-)router and cannot acces the knoppmythbox via ssh.

my network environment is a workstation, a notebook, a netgear router and just added an epia based knoppmythbox. i did the autoinstallation and it seemed to work alright, then i tried to acces the knoppmythbox via ssh, to make the modifications listed in http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/index.php?page=EpiaMotherboards. in putty i just got network errors and my internet connection is lost.

the computers in my network all get their ip adresses via dhcp, the knoppmythbox however is assigend a special ip address in the router so that i can access the box from the internet (in the future).

as already said, the knoppmythbox is based on an epia m1000b mainboard, a pvr 350 tuner card is used and the knoppmyth version is r4v4...

where did i go wrong? any help would be appreciated since i'm quite new to linux.

greetings, holzauto

well why don't you tell us what the settings you gave the knoppmyth box are. It shouldn't hurt anything to tell us since it should be on a private network anyways. something like you describe could happen if you set the network settings wrong on the knoppmyth box.

Any chance the switch is freaking out when the knoppmythbox is both connected and powered on?

I've seen some switches "dislike" having all their ports filled and/or the ethernet chipsets of one of the connected computers to the point that they fail when that machine is both connected and turned on.

This may be basic, but did you accidentally duplicate the IP address of your router on your Myth box?

hey snapper,

that was it... in the myth configuration it said ip 127.0.0.1 and in my router i gave it the ip 192.168.0.5, after setting the ip address in the myth box to 192.168.0.5 it works..

but now i encounter another problem, when i startup my mythbox without a keyboard attached, it halts when loading linux at the point where the startupscript says something about ptys .. :?: when a keyboard is connected it starts up normally. what went wrong, the bios is set halt on no errors. what do i need to change to get the box started correctly because my goal is to use this thing in my livingroom without a keyboard..

sorry at this point this is a known issue, and there is no known workaround.

Go get one of these Lite-On wireless keyboards from NewEgg. It's a great alternative, since we have to have a keyboard anyway. I use the IR receiver and a programmable remote to control my system, saving myself from learing about LIRC. Plus, for those rare instances when I need a keyboard and mouse to restart the frontend or something, I can just pull it out and go.
