hello, I am having problems with my remote controlling anything in mythtv.

I am using the packard bell remote and receiver
I have modified the /etc/init.d/lircd file as suggested in this forum
irw gives me correct output
I have run the "install-i686-l" script
I have an ~mythtv/.lircrc file corresponding to the remote as found in this forum
I am running fvwm and have "exec irxevent &" in my .fvwm2rc file
I have "lircd" and "irxevent" running as processes.

At this point, I am not sure what I am missing, and any help would be appreciated.

Assuming you recompiled LIRC for that remote... MythTV w/ native LIRC doesn't work via irxevent. /etc/lircd.conf needs to correspond to your remote as does ~/.mythtv/lircrc. If the two files are good to go, I'd suggest stopping irxevent.
