Quite new to linux etc... D/L an R4V5 iso and made a CD. Checked the MD5. OK. So CD is good. Tried various boot options on 2 PC's and 2 laptops. The boot seems to proceed OK with no obvious errors. But each time I just end up in a blank X windows screen with 'X' cursor in middle of screen. Am able to move cursor and get a short menu by R-clicking. Can exit from here to cmd prompt. Now none of these boxes have a TV card installed. I just wanted to check out the Interface. Do I need all the correct H/W inorder to see the I/F? Tks, Mark |

Click the mouse and find the menu option for 'xterm'. Click that and you'll get a window where you can type unix commands. Type mythfrontend and hit enter. You should now get an error message that tells you why the frontend is not starting. |

I'm pretty sure booting from CD only gets you a "frontend" for Myth, not a "backend". The frontend can play shows, but it needs to connect to a backend for its source. The MySql errors are probably saying it can't find a backend machine to connect to. But I could be wrong... |

If you just wanted to check out the interface, you could have looked at the screenshots on the MythTV website. You need to configure the system in order to get it to work. |

OK. This backend MySQL has me a bit flummoxed. I thought the whole idea of KnoppMyth was to have a PVR on a CD? Having to install MySql to a HD asa backend completely passed me by somehow. Ok. Now I know the lay of the land I'll do a little bit of replanning. Thanks for the advice to look at screenshots. Have done but will do so again. Thanks to you all. Mark |

Yeah, the backend must be installed to HD, and the knoppmyth CD makes it very easy. If you want to have a separate front end, you can boot the frontend off the CD and run without HD install. |
