I recently put together a nice little box to use as a PVR and decided to give KnopMyth a try. I bought a nice big 200 gig hard drive. During the autoinstall, when it gets to the portion where it formats the 4 partitions (/, /cache, swap, and /myth), the first 3 are fine but the system hangs when it starts to format the /myth partition.

One of 2 things will happen: sometimes it will just freeze at 29% and I have to reboot. Other times, the screen will go black (presumably a screen saver?) but I can't restore the screen.

Has anybody encountered a problem like this, or might know how I can fix it?

I don't think the rest of the hardware will matter for this, but in case you need to know: Chaintech motherboard with onboard audio, video, ethernet, and tv-out, 512 megs of ram, aopen dvd burner, hauppauge pvr250 tuner, and a standard hauppauge wintv tuner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

try hitting the shift key every so often so the screen saver doesn't kick in or you could go to another console and issue the command setterm blank=0

If that doesn't work (it didn't for me) try entering the following at the boot prompt.
Code:
knoppmyth vga=normal

Before I started doing this it would complete the install about 1 in 8 times (and freeze with the blinky keyboard lights the other times). Since I started doing this I have done about 10 installs without a problem.

I'll give both of those a try when I get home from work tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

That seems to have did the trick, I'm staring at the mythtv setup screen now :)

Thanks a lot!

Now... I'm having a couple issues post-installation but I'm going to tinker and hunt around a bit before I start another thread.

I'm installing with a new 200gig Maxtor (EIDE, ATA/133, 7200 RPM , the cheap one you find on the internet). Setting the VGA mode to normal fixed the hang at 29% on my system. I then issued the setterm command to fix the screen blank problem that I have had on every other install so I didn't have to sit here while the mamoth thing formats. :)

The correct command to use for the screen blank is:
Code:
setterm -blank 0

Thanks for this info! My wife was starting to give me nasty looks when the new HD wasn't working.

Worked for me too.

Code:
knoppmyth vga=normal

Consequently I have the same drive as well: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB
