Ok, I'm trying to install the NVIDIA drivers, and not having much luck...

My System:
    Athlon XP3200
    Abit NF7S-v2 Motherboard
    MSI 5900XT VIVO Video card
    1Gb Corsair RAM
    12Gb Maxtor IDE HD
    LG L1915S 19" TFT Monitor (1280x1024)

Firstly I tried the install instructions from the main Knoppmyth site (http://mysettopbox.tv/doc.html#manualinstall) which told me to do this:
    <CTRL><ALT><F1>
    log in as rooot.
    cd /usr/src
    tar xjvf kernel<TAB>
    install-nv<TAB>
This will install the drivers and restart GDM.

Which didn't work, then "install-nv<TAB>" line wouldn't autocomplete, so it couldn't find the file.

I then tried the suggestion here:
http://www.podtronics.com/knoppmyth/FAQ.htm

And I got as far as:
sh 1.0-4496/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

Which gives me an "Unable to determine target kernel version" error

Then I found a file called install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh which I ran, and it kind of installed, but gave an error:

Make: *** [kernel_module_install] Error 2

and now when I try to start GNOME I get an error:

    Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeed.a:spencode.o":No Symbols Found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

    Fatal server error:
    No screens found.

The GNOME error had 4 lines like the "Skipping /usr..." line, but that went down to one when I tried apt-get install nvidia-glx

Almost everything on the net I've found suggests it's an XF86Config-4 problem, but I've been trying different things with that for days, and the only thing I've suceeded in doing is making more error messages...

Can anyone help?

Thanks

You didn't say which version of KnoppMyth you are using. From your problem description I will guess you're using the alpha release, R5A10 or later.

If you search the forum at all, you will find numerous references to this issue. Short answer: You need to un-tar the linux source before running the install-nvidia-6629.sh script. Re-do the script after expanding the sources, and all will be well.

Also if I'm not mistaken after you must symlink your source to linux
Code:
ln -s kernel-source-2.6.9-chw linux
when your in /usr/src/

Gotta give 'em points for a good detailed hardware and problem description though... ;-)

BTW - The easy way to install the drivers is using install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh and in the latest versions it even unpacks the kernel source for you.

well yes, but those versions are not available to the public at this point, so he'd still have to untar the kernel before running the install nvidia script.

Guy's thank you so much :D
I un-tared the source, ran 'ln -s kernel-source-2.6.9-chw linux' and then re-ran the driver and it worked fine.
