I'd suggest console on a regular monitor and X server on tv-out until you get things working. That's what I did.

Note that lspci lists device IDs in hex, and XFree expects it in decimal by default unless you put 0x in front i.e.

lspci -v
...
00:0c.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
...

and in XFRee:

BusID "0:0x0c:0"

Also try reshuffling PCI cards if you have a piece of garbage motherboard (like I do).

I don't think he's trying to get pvr350 tv out so none of that stuff should be neccesary.

ok define freezes. can you still ping the box? can you ssh into the box? does anything ever show up on the screen? do you see the console stuff then it goes away when X starts? have you loaded the nvidia drivers?

well lets just start with those answers and work from there.

when it freezes, I can see a black screen with a dark grey border around it. I am not able to ping or ssh into it.

The nvidia drivers are loaded but that does not seem to change anything. Tried to do a clean install and the same thing happend with the default nv drivers.

well if you cannot ping or ssh into the box it is truly frozen you will need to look at /var/log/messages and see if it gives you any clues.
