Post subject:  installation question(s)

question 1: how does the auto-installation work? like does it let me specify the partition to install to or does it choose it automatically? (i ask this cuz i have data on other drives/partitions that i dont want automatically overwritten)

question 2: if auto-install doesnt let me specify the partition, then i assume manual installation is the only way to go...i tried it but it doesnt seem to b working right...it boots up to the prompt thing, and i cant seem to login (i assume u type "login" to login?)...

im a total idiot when it comes to linux

thanks for your help, i really wanna get this working when i get home from work

1.Auto install will wipe /dev/hda 1 clean and partition it. /dev/hda is primary master

2.Yes, manual will let you choose. Follow the instructions.http://mysettopbox.tv/doc.html#manualinstall

and of course with my inherent bad luck and lack of any linux knowledge, it didnt work....3 times....

i swear i followed the manual step by step

i *think* it would all work if i could just do the step where ya comment out "skip networking", but i cant do that cuz i dont know how to make the my.cnf file writable, then how to actually edit and save it

but even then i dont know if it will work, what the heck is wrong, im so frustrated :(

the only time you comment out skip networking is if you are trying to run a frontend, and then you don't do it on the frontend only on the backend. Are you following the instructions for frontend or manual install?

i read thru the whole thing...and i got it to sorta work, at least i can get to the mythtv-setup thing...

i had to do the mysql create database mythconverg; thing...which i dont remember seeing in the manual :-S

then that got me to the options and stuff...

now i dont know if i have the right ip's and stuff set cuz when i run the frontend and try to go to livetv it gives me a message saying it cant connect to something

what im confused with is if i dont want the frontend (or do i *need* the frontend/cd), then what do i want? i have the manual installation run and all that...

do the frontend and backend have to b run on 2 separate physical computers? if so how can i run it without the frontend?

basically what i want is to boot the computer and have it take me straight to live tv (or at least to the screen that lets u choose live tv)

man i feel like an idiot, but im glad i didnt try hacking my tivo or i would have killed it with my lack of linux know-how :(

what you are looking for is a fronted/backend both run on the same computer. Here's how it works. In order for myth tv to work there has to be a frontend, and a backend. They can both reside on one computer. Or they can reside on different computers or you can have several frontends connect to the same backend.

As far as getting your setup to work did you do the last step in setup and choose your cable/tv/sat/etc. provider? and after that did you run mythfilldatabase?

yea i want the frontend and backend to run on the same computer...dont have a need for multiple frontends or backends at this time...

i was in the configuration thing and in the part where i put in the zip code, but it didnt give me anything in the menu below it for providers (was it supposed to?) and no i didnt do the mythfilldatabase

im prolly gonna wind up leaving work early again to work on this, i left 2 and a half hours early yesterday cuz i was excited to go home and try it lol
