Post subject: | undefined mode error on R5a12 |
Hi all- I have been a knoppmyth user for about a year now and love it. I wanted to upgrade from R4v5 to R5a12, but have run into this error when I boot- "you have passed an undefined mode press to see modes or press enter to scan" I did some searching around and found that I should try noapic or vga=normal but no luck. So I entered one of the modes and it started to detect hardware. Ok I got passed that part, but then I get "mp-bios bug 8254" . I googled but could find no answers that seamed to make sense. I am not able to run the latest knoppix on this box(same error), but both the Debian sarge installer and the R4v5 disks both work. I have even tried with it attached just to my tv and just to a monitor. The motherboard is a CHAINTECH "7NIF4" NVIDIA nForce2 IGP. Please help and thank you for your time. MrSlappy |

That seems strange. I have the same board and R5a12 installed ok for me. At the boot: prompt I just pressed enter and it installed fine. What version is your bios? What other cards are installed in the system? |

Thanks for the reply. The Bios is version 6.0pg the date is 07-19-2004. The cards in the box are a pvr 250 and a generic 5.1 sound card. This is the full message I am getting "mp-bios bug 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" Thanks for the help... MrSlappy |

You're installing while hooked up to a TV right? You also have the option to continue. Just continue... You will need to change vga=normal after installing (or you can wait an extra 30 sec each time you reboot). |

Thanks for the suggestion Cesman, but I have tried that and have tried hooking it up to a monitor. I did somemore googling on the subject and have found it to be specific to NForce 2 motherboards. I am going to try to update the bios if there is one. The only thing I can think of ... P.S. Cesman thanks for the time spent on this project. |

I have an nforce 2 board and I see this when I installed with it hooked up to my TV. All I do is continue, you can also select a mode 25 row should do... It isn't a biggie and shouldn't prevent you from installing. |

Cesman thanks for the advice and that does get me past the video mode problem, but I still get the "mp-bios bug 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" error. I think it has to do with a fault in the IO the way it is being read. I bought the Nforce2 board because at the time it was your reference board and the one Jared recomended. I am at a loss for what to do next. I dont mind staying with R4v5, but I do want the latest and greatest. ![]() Thanks for your help and if anyone has had this problem let me know what you did to fix it. MrSlappy |

I board of choice was the 7NIF2, not the 7NIF4. I have not read its specs... Try Code: knoppmyth noacpi

you can also try looking in the bios for anything related to apic and turn it off, or try the noapic and or nolapic boot options. |
