Post subject:  Myth TV freezes 5 - 20 minutes into recording

I've just built a MythTV box and finally have it up and running. Most everything works great- watching live TV, pausing live TV, weather, etc. The problem is that when I set the computer to record a show, it freezes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes into the show. The entire box freezes, with no response from the keyboard or mouse.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

My setup:
    AthlonXP 2500+ CPU
    Biostar M7NCG 400 Mobo
    256 Mb RAM
    Onboard nVidia audio & video
NIC card (I couldn't get the onboard LAN to work)
    Hauppauge WinTV Go
    30 Gb HD
160 Gb HD, not currently being used by MythTV
    KnoppMyth R4

The CPU temperature gets up to about 55* C when recording. This is pretty warm, but well within the allowable range.

Thanks!

sounds like the local apic problem. Search the forums there are many threads about it. I'm afraid it's not good only way to fix it at this point is a kernel recompile.

Any chance that R5 will have a fix for this local APIC problem? I spent the last two weeks trying to compile and build MythTV manually and just about gave up. I was hoping that Knoppmyth would be my savior.

My guess is no, but I thought I'd ask- Will turning off the APIC settings in the BIOS aleviate the LAPIC freeze-ups?

no disabling it in the bios has no effect. The only way to fix it is to recompile the kernel. I know the knoppmyth devs are aware of the problem, but I am not sure if or how they would fix it. If they decided to go to the 2.6 kerenel there is a boot opition that can turn it off, but the 2.6 kernel is very new and I doubt they would move to it just yet.

Thanks for your help, Xsecrets. I guess I'll be delving back into the command-line world. :x

well at least you won't have to build or compile mythtv. Just the kernel and all related modules. LOL

by the way there are several threads on this board about how to recompile the kernel for this very issue.

Post subject:  Compile problems

Well, I've gone through the steps with recompiling the Kernel, via BugRoger's guide elsewhere on this forum. Everything went smoothly and the compile seemed to go smoothly until it came up with an error along the lines of

Can't open directory usr/src/linux/modules/extras/...

I checked and sure enough there was no directory called "extras". Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?

Thanks.[/quote]
