I have a usb keyboard and the R5A15 install does not support USB keyboards apparently, It works with the R5A12 but not the R5A15. It even works on the boot menu, just when it gets to the knoppmyth menu it does not.

Also the R5V15 boot menu says R5A14 fyi.

So I guess I will be installing with R5V12 for now.

I had the same problem with a USB mouse. I just booted the frontend only from the CD, and my USB mouse didn't work when the window manager came up. (I noticed the boot screen says R5A14 also, but that is extremely minor.)

Doesn't anybody read the FAQs or the Wiki or any of the half dozen other places where folks repeatedly try to warn you that "USB Keyboards and Mice are troublesome."

Seriously, why buy potential trouble when the PS2 stuff "just plain works" with zero risk? Yes, the new 2.6.xx kernels are supposed to fix this, but it's always been an area where stuff goes a bit flakey.

Sign me, "Baffled" :?

Trust me, I would much rather be using a PS2 keyboard and mouse, then I could use my KVM switch. However, the only spare motherboard I have for my mythtv box, has a short where the PS2 stuff connects to the motherboard, so neither a ps2 keyboard nor ps2 mouse work on this box.

So for me a PS2 keyboard and mouse do not just *work*.

Well, when it works in one version then stops working after an upgrade, you sometimes forget to check back through all of the docs you already read for "that thing that didn't seem important at the time because it worked originally but may not work some time in the future." Sorry.

Try unplugging the usb devices, then replugging them in when the green bar for auto configuration is runs. That seemed to solve my problem with Knoppix with regards to USB keyboard and mice.

What I did:
1. type "tv" at boot menu (or just press enter)
2. unplug my USB keyboard
3. wait till the green auto config bar comes up
4. plug them in before the auto config finishes

I am trying to install R5A16 onto a DELL GX280. (Not my choice, but only machine I have)

I had to remove the twinhan card to stop it locking up, so thats Ok, now it gets to the "KnoppMyth Main Menu" for installation, but I have no keyboard action.

I know USB keyboards are not ideal, but this PC has no other options..

I have tried acpi=off as a boot option, I have tried failsafe, and I have tried pulling the USB keyboard out, and then back in again. Nothign so far has worked.

Can anyone suggest anything (Short of getting a new PC or motherboard) that may help make this work?

I really want to get my machine up and running..

TIA

Looking at this machine it would appear that it does not have PS/2 ports, welcome to the future. Anyway check in your bios for a setting that asks if you can set USB to legacy mode. What this should do is allow the USB devices be used in dos sort of OSes.

Give that a go.

Seems like a proper place to ask this. I am making a combination mame and mythtv box and this seems like the ideal solution. The thing that I am wndering about is if I will have this problem of usb keyboard and mouse working after the installiation. The reason that I ask is that the controller works as a USB keyboard. BTW for getting past the problem on the install unpluging and pluggin the keyboard and mouse will cause them to be recognized for the install after boot.

I had the same problem, even when enabling USB keyboard and mouse support in the BIOS. I found a way around it though.

I had one USB keyboard plugged in at the start. I could press enter on the splash screen, but the keyboard stopped working by the time I got to the menu. At this point I plugged in a second USB keyboard into a different slot. You could hear the CD spin up and then both keyboards started working.

Try it.

As to why I don't have a PS2 keyboard... the one's I liberated from work only come in USB.

I can confirm that during install, a USB keyboard WILL disappear just after all the standard linux hardware probing before you get to the Auto Install menu. Simply unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in should reactivate the keyboard. This is on the latest Knoppmyth, R5A16 or close to that. I was able to complete the install normally and have had no USB related problems since.
