Post subject:  Current nVidia driver installation instructions?

I know there have been several threads on this subject. I've read most of them and still can't figure out the correct way to install the nVidia drivers. When I run the install-nvidia.sh that comes with R4, I get the infamous relocation error when MythTV starts up:

mythtv: relocation error: /usr/lib/tls/libGLcore.so.1: undefined symbol: __gl_tls_ves0

Another user reported this error in http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=354.

I tried nvidia-live.sh, but that gave me a 404 when downloading the drivers. I then found that Kano has newer versions of install-nvidia-debian.sh at

http://kano.mipooh.net/

But when I run those scripts, they hang while trying to connect to download.nvidia.com. Maybe it's just that the site was down last night when I tried to run the script.

There's a ton of info out on the net, but it's hard to tell what's current and what's not. If someone could point me to the latest installation instructions, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Boris

Check out the instructions found here: http://www.podtronics.com/knoppmyth/FAQ.htm

They worked for me.

Just curious you mentioned this problem as notorious and I have seen other posts about it, but my question is do you have any sort of odd setup? disks not on primary master etc? scsi disks maybe? neither of these should make any difference, but I have just not ever had any problem whatsoever with the nvidia install script that comes with knoppmyth, and was trying to figure out where the problem is comming in.

One other thing I was thinking that may be happening is people may be trying to run the script as a non root user. Is everyone logging in as root to run the script?

Oops! Thanks for the pointer to the FAQ. I had looked at it before, but missed the nVidia driver section. It may have been before the nVidia section was added. I'll try following the driver installation instructions in the FAQ to see if they work for me.

As far as my setup, I don't think it's anything special:

* Jetway motherboard
* Celeron 2.5GHz
* Best Data graphics card with GeForce4 chipset and TV out
* Hard disk on IDE1
* CD-RW on IDE2

I'm definitely running the scripts as root.

I have one more question on a related topic. I seem to have hosed myself with the driver install. I saw that Kano had a script that installs the 5328 version of the nVidia driver. I figured I'd run that so I had the latest version. Now when my system boots up I get a completely black screen. No prompt, no X. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F7 don't do anything.

I've gotten around this in the past by reinstalling KnoppMyth from scratch. That's my current plan, but it's kind of a drastic measure. Is there a way to boot Linux into some sort of command-line only "safe mode" to try to recover from the bad driver install?

Thanks again for all the help,

Boris

You may need to specify "ConnectedMonitor" "TVOut", check the Nvidia manual for more details on using a TV. You can boot using the CD and chroot, if you encounter problem.

Woo-hoo, success! The instructions in the FAQ definitely work. I was able to install the nVidia driver and watched an MPEG4 CD with stunning clarity. Thanks to everyone for your help. Now on to live TV...
