 Post subject: installing r5v15
PostPosted: Mon May 30, 2005 7:51 am
1) I have installed r5v15 aount 6 times in the last two days to no avail. I can't get my alsamixer to work properly. Apparently, the current knoppix version uses 1.0.8 and a newer version, 1.0.9 is out. Does anyone know how to properly install 1.0.9 over 1.0.8? I am unable to turn up my PCM and MASTER volumes and they have green 00's above them. Using the up and down arrows do not do anything to them. My LINE does not say CAPTURE above it like it usually does in R4V4.1 (or previous).

I've seen many posts similar to this, if not exactly like this, but no real resolve. The only one that seems correct is the downloading the newer version and installing/compiling it, but I am unsure of what commands in linus will help me do that (i'm no linux buff--but i missssssssssss my MYTHTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :` (.

2) Also, when i change my XF86config-4 file, it does not put it on my TV. I only see it on my monitor. I have added these options in:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT, TV"
Option "TwinView" "1"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60"
Option "MetaModes" "800x600, 800x600"
Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
Option "NvAGP" "0"
Option "NoLogo" "1"

would copying the sample TVOut config file work for most TV's? If so, I will just select all, copy, then paste it into the real XF86config-4 file.

3) Finally, I'm not sure how to setup an auto update for my ntpdate so that my hardware and system clocks dont get too far behind. Generally, in the past, I have used the CRONTAB -E method, but in R5V15, it send me into some application and I do not know how to get out of it, nor does it have the same text that the old command used to take me to. Where do I setup an auto ntpdate to let's say, time.windows.com? The installHowTo for time is related to R4Vx, not R5V15 (crontab -e takes me to a new place).

Thanks,

interating installer

Any particualr reason you are installing a15 rather than a16 (or even a15.1)?

What does Knoppix using ALSA 1.08 have to do with KnoppMyth?

1) With the capture problem and stuff, I found that with my Sound Blaster Audigy you can not use the [SPACEBAR] to choose the which port to capture on as it is automatically selected. If you have a look at the alsa website http://alsa-project.org/ you will find good information on your particular card, whatever the hell it is.

As a side note, to install the updated version in KnoppMyth you can use apt-get to get the latest version.

2) One thing I don't see in your XF86Config-4 that you have given a snippet of is how you connect to the TV. Now I can't remember the proper term (as I am currently at work), but you need to tell the system how you have connected your TV. eg. Option "ConectionType" "Composite"

3) If you have a look at the knoppmyth wiki, when it is available there is an article on exactly this issue.

I feel your pain. Took me a few installs to get comfortable going back to r5a10.
I've seen the alsa settings addressed in numerous postings throughout the forum. My approach with alsamixer (1.0.8) has been:
1. Make sure PCM and Master are not muted. You seem to have that covered. Recent versions don't have Master or PCM volume sliders.
2. Make sure "IEC958 Capture Monitor" is off (muted). My experience is that this is crucial. Other IEC958 values don't seem to matter.
3. For my mobo's built-in VIA AC97 sound (Biostar M7VIG 400), the "VIA DXS 1" slider controls volume but isn't mapped to any Myth lirc controls. Haven't bothered to fiddle with the config since I'm playing sound through A/V receiver.

As for XF86Config-4, the nvidia sample tv file works for me with slight mods:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Monitor0"
        Option  "DPMS"  "true"
        Option  "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
        ##Option        "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
        Option  "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE"
        ##Option        "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
        Option  "NoLogo" "0"
        Option  "TVOverScan" "0.7"
        VendorName      "KDS"
        ModelName       "KDS1983"
        HorizSync 30 - 50 # DDC-probed
        VertRefresh 60 # DDC-probed
        # These are the DDC-probed settings reported by your monitor.

I get away with ConnectedMonitor commented out when connecting to A/V receiver or TV. Lets me plug back into monitor with no file edits. This may not work for everyone. Your settings are twinview-specific. You only need them if you want a monitor for a console and a TV (big monitor>?) for X (i.e Myth).

This tier 2 posting covers your ntp question and more:

Hope this helps.
