Post subject:  Is a sound card necessary with a PVR-350?

I am going to have front and backend running on the same box and I have a
Hauupauge PVR-350. My motherboard does not have a built-in sound card. I
am working with KnoppMyth R4.

Do I need a sound card in order to capture/play live video, or playback
recorded video, or can I use the audio-out of the PVR-350? Once setup, I
will only have a TV (no monitor) connected to my MythTV box.

If I can use the PVR-350 for sound without a sound card, how do I
configure it as such?

BTW, I am having the black screen when trying to watch TV problem, and from the reading into the following thread, I think my problem is related to not having a sound card setup correctly:

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Yes, you need a sound card. How else will you hear what is being played? I don't think MythTV would workout can sound card.... The 350 isn't a soundcard or is it a true video card.

Thanks, I was unsure since the MythTV documentation states that a sound card is not necessary when encoding with a encoder supported by ivtv, but it didn't state anything when decoding.

Now to see if we can get our soundcard to work with alsa and knoppmyth.

Thanks,

Jason

I don't think a soundcard is needed if all you do is play files supported by the PVR-350 (ie. MPG2), as the onboard decoder will handle this.

well yes the onboard decoder would handle it, but where would you output the audio to? svideo cannot carry audio. You have to have an audio out port somewhere.

for those of you trying to answer questions about this, do a little research before saying something that may not be true.
the pvr-350 does have an audio decoder and outputs for said decoder. but as mentioned, its only gonna do any good for you on formats that the pvr-350 decoder supports, ie mpeg and mpeg2.
the pvr-350 *should* make for a nice all in one solution for tv type pvr functions, but it is a complete pain to get all the functions on the card to work. trust me, i have one and ended up installing it into my windows box and pretending its a pvr-250 for now. i do plan on trying knoppmyth with it though.
