I managed to crash Linux by trying to exit fvwm. Why? I don't know. I guess I just was wondering what would happen if I chose the "exit fvwm" menu item. When I tried to exit fvwm I got a bunch of screen static and was unable to gracefully shut down. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F7 didn't work so I had to push the power button to reboot.

So now I'm hosed. When I try to watch live TV, it tells me that "MythTV is already using all available inputs for recording." When I try to play a recorded program, MythTV unexpectedly exits. When I try to run mythtv-setup, the "input connections" menu is empty. Then mythtv-setup crashes with a seg fault and logs "Couldn't open /dev/video to probe its inputs."

Is there a way to kick the system into releasing whatever resources it thinks are locked?

Thanks,

Boris

Restart the backend and take a look at the log. Worse case backup and reinstall using auto-upgrade.
