Post subject:  "Cannot start X server" error

I am another newie to the Linux & MythTV world. I wanted to see the MythTV menu, layout, etc., before I spent the money for a TV tuner card. I download and created a KnoppMyth CD ver 5.16.

I installed the app on a Gigabyte mother board (GA-8IDX), Pent. 4/1.6, 512 memory, 160 gig hd. The video card is a Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM PCI (S3 Vision 968).

After installation is completed and then the reboot, I am getting the error, "Cannot start the X server".

I tried the Diamond Stealth card in another PC (HP Pavilion P3/850 mhz, 80 gig hd) and it worked. I was able to bring up the MythTV menus, etc.

I tried another video card in the Gigabyte PC an this seems to work, but I would like for the Stealth 64 to work, since it worked in the HP Pavilion PC.

Any ideas about the error?
Thanks

Well you're definitely a hair off the beaten track with that video card, most of the folks around here use some type of Nvidia card or an Nvidia chipset with video builtin or the Via Unichrome. I assuming that you're left in a console screen after the boot, so login as root and check some log files to track down the cause of this...

The first thing to do is to look around in /var/log
Code:
cd /var/log
ls -tlr

This will list some log files with the most recent at the bottom. The first one to look at is XFree86.0.log
Code:
more XFree86.0.log

This will let you scroll through the file. What you want is probably at the end...
