Post subject:  Upgrade to KnoppMyth from non-Knopp MythTV setup?

I've got a Debian-based system running MythTV (15.1, IIRC) that was built from sources. I'd like to install KnoppMyth without losing my database, recorded TV programs and music. I've found instructions and threads about upgrading from one KnoppMyth version to another. To do what I want, it seems I need to:
  1. Re-partition my drive to have the number of partitions expected by KM.
  2. Move my recorded TV shows and music to the expected directories.
  3. Do the equivalent of a "backup" to dump the dabase to a file (files) underneath /backup.

Are there any instructions for "upgrading" to KnoppMyth from a non-Knopp MythTV installation? I searched the Forum but could only find info about preserving database and recordings when the old system as a KnoppMyth installation.

Look at the backup script (the source was posted somewhere around here semi-recently). If you have any Unix knowledge at all what it''s doing is pretty clear. You can make the exact same backup files and copy them to the /myth/backup/ directory before the postinstall setup. You might even be able to modify the backp script to do it for you... The only other thing to do is copy over the video/music/... data files.

BTW - I did essentially the same thing to migrate from my old box to my new box, so I know this works.

Actaully, this has been covered before... The essentials are hostname and directories.

Any hints where? I spent about a half hour searching the forum and didn't find anything.

I assume that sentence will make sense after I look at the backup script?
[off to see if I can find the backup script...]

Thanks, I will.

It always helps to know what you're trying to do can be done.

well the hostname comment makes general sence anytime you are dealing with databases they don't particularly care for you changing your hostname.

I actually did this in my migration (black to black2) and it was PITA. Before the restore I had to do a search and replace for all occurance of the hostname in the dumpfile and verify that each one really should be changed. I used several editting tricks to make sure I wasn't seeing things like "blackbird" or "a black book". Then I went back and made sure none of those should be updated... If you keep the hostname the same it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the hint. I'll make sure I keep the hostname the same. I downloaded the iso today. Hopefully the new box will be here by the weekend.
