Hi there. I've read the faqs, googled, read and have everything working except the TV. To make sure I have no hardware problems, I installed Windows 2000 sp4 and the Hauppauge 250 software. Everything works fine, but I don't want to use Windows.

Whether I'm using the (preferred) S-Video input, the composite or coaxial, sound is great but no TV image. DVDs play fine. I'm using the nVidia 7174 driver. I also tried the other, older driver, but it wouldn't install.

I've read posts in which people have tried various manual monitor but I'm very much unaware of how to proceed here. I've also tried 3 CRTs: Hitachi 21", Dell 16" and Apple 17" and all produce the same result.

I'm wondering if this modeline generator may help:

http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

I'm going to try this, but would apprciate any tips before I start since I have no idea what I'm doing here. Indeed, I'm not even sure if this is the right thing to try next.

I always do all my research first, read posts and faqs before posting here. Yet, I have been rebuked online for following KnoppMyth wiki instructions that turn out to be out of date and for missing one of the FAQs.

If you feel the urge to berate me as a clueless newbie, well, I probably am. But then again, I'm an expert in other areas where you might be a newbie. I'm sure you would appreciate an absence of trollish responses to your posts in those realms, just as I appreciate such absences here.

Yes, the answer might be obvious to you. The answers that one knows generally are. But if you feel unable to post anything constructive, please post nothing. Thank you.

And thank you very much to those who've been polite and helpful.

Peter

can you see the mythtv interface with the menus and all? If you can then a new modeline will not help you.

The problem probably lies somewhere in the setup of your tvcard. This can be very tricky to work out as many of the manufacturers change the tuner on what seems to be a weekly basis and tracking down what tuner settings you need becomes very difficult.

Did you ever say what tv card you are using?

Thank you for your kind reply.

Yes, I'm using a Hauppauge 250, and the full specs of my rig are in my sig. I tried to be extra thorough in the hopes that something in there will ring a bell with a more experienced user.

Regarding your other question, all menus work fine. Everything works stunningly well until I select Watch Live TV. Then I get instant grey screen, although the sound works fine. When I try to quit, it crashes.

I've spoken to both MSI tech support and Hauppauge. They can't figure it out.

Thanks again.

Peter

if you know how to ssh into the box copy the results of the following command into the forums here.
Code:
cat /var/log/messages | grep ivtv

If you get lost on how to do this let us know where you get stuck.

Thank you for the suggestion. I ssh'd in and got this output from the suggested command. The name of my box is ariatv. The closest thing I see to an error message is "Unreasonably low latency timer, setting to 64 (was 32)". Sorry, I'm just not educated enough to understand most of what I'm looking at here.

If anyone sees a flag here, please let me know. Thanks much.

Peter

is what I was looking for, though later It says it's setting it to 39 which I would imagine comes from the config file, though it may or may not be correct.

look in /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv and see if you have tuner or type = 39 if so change it to -1 and see what happens. -1 tells it to attempt to autodetect the tuner type.

full contents of /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
#options ivtv debug=1
#options tuner type=2
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe tuner; /sbin/modprobe msp3400; /sbin/modprobe saa7115; /sbin/mod$
remove ivtv /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove ivtv && /sbin/modprobe -r saa7115 && /sbin/modp$

I don't see a type=39 in here, although it has options tuner type=2, but that is commented out.

In case this is important, other files in that directory include ivtv0, ivtv1, ivtv2 and ivtv3.

Is there something else I should change? Thank you again.

Peter

try cat /var/log/messages | grep tveeprom and what it thinks your tuner type is.

Interesting. The output says that I have a model 32062, which I googled and found to match the PVR-250. So, this is apparently correct. However, I'm sure you can decipher the rest of the output more effectively than I can.

It also notes the firmware version, but perhaps most importantly it does say type = 39 in output line 3. Should I edit that? Thank you.

Peter

no it looks like you are ok on that because it does say it's setting it to 39 from your earlier post.

can you try opening an xterm and running mythfrontend from there then try to play livetv then when it goes to black screen exit back out of it and see what error messages are left in the xterm?

I would normally end an xterm session by typing exit, but since this isn't possible, I tried "q" and escape. But as usual, it crashed rather than exiting. Is there a way to force exiting from the session even with the screen dark?

Ctrl-D

To make sure you've broken out of anything else that it's running:

Ctrl-C Ctrl-D

I ran mythfrontend from xterm and waited to hear the TV sound. As soon as I did, and started pressing Ctrl-C then Ctrl-D and when nothing happened, repeated several times.

I'm sorry, but the computer never responded, and after a few seconds, crashed.

I could try loggin in from another machine and killing the process remotely. I did login and run top, but saw no process called xterm. Would:

killall xterm

work?

Peter

Actually:
Code:
pkill front
would probably be better. If the X session comes back after that you should have the xterm with the messages sitting right there.

BTW - Some of this has to do with which application is grabbing the keyboard input at the time. When you start up mythfrontend it grabs the focus. You *might* be able to use the Alt-Tab thing to bring your xterm to the foreground in which case Ctl-C should work to kill the misbehaving frontend. However when mythfrontend goes bad it often goes REALLY bad and leaves the X server very, very wedged.
