Hi all,

The install procedure asks you to set the timezone during the initial phase when it is running off the CD drive, and then again when knoppmyth is booting off of the hard drive for the first time.

I've wondered why we get prompted for the timezone information twice during an install. From searching the forums I can see that the general answer is because the first time we are asked, the information isn't saved anywhere because of read only file system issues, and so needs to be reasked at a later point.

I've also gathered that the issue is fixable, but nobody has been inspired enough to code up a solution. Fair enough.

But why does the initial install procedure need to ask for timezone information anyway? If the information isn't being saved anywhere, and is only used during the initial stage of the install to the hard disk, what is its purpose? To properly timestamp files as they get copied over to the hard drive? Is that a big deal?

I can also see the timezone question being useful if you were bringing up a frontend, but the question is asked after one mentions that one is going to do a hd install.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn't a big deal I know, I'm just curious to know about what's going on. On my personal notes, I'm just noting to skip through the first appearance of the timezone dialog, and fill it in correctly when I see it a second time. This seems to work, but if I'm not understanding something I'd like to be corrected.

Thanks,

-Aubrey

No one is going to do anything about such a minor issue in the current installer because the whole installer is going to be replaced soon with the new graphical installer.

Ah, excellent. I didn't know that there was a new installer in the works.

Well, I'll look forward to seeing the new installer in action at a later date then.

Thanks,
