Post subject:  WARNING - incorrectly setting up a frontend nuked my master

As the topic says... I setup a new frontend just now, ran myth-tvsetup and entered in the master's IP address under option 1. Stopped the backend and mysql on the frontend, edited /usr/share/mythtv/mysql.txt with the correct info. Myth kept telling me it couldn't connect to the master server... well, that's because somehow doing this install cleared my channel info on the master.

How can the frontend do this? Am I better off not giving it the master's IP in the mythtv-setup and just editing the txt file? (I had to myth-tvsetup on the master and clear my settings. Running mythfilldatabase now.) No big deal, I just want to learn from this mistake. The wife is all pissed off now because she has to enter all her shows in there again :)

Thanks for any insight you guys can provide into this (maybe there's a way to access the master in readonly mode or something?) Cesman suggested not using mythtv-setup for a frontend in this thread. Is this how the frontend was able to nuke the backend's data?

Again, you don't run mythtv-setup on a frontend only setup. All you need is mysql.txt.http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-5.html#ss5.4 Read the "Frontend-only configuration".

Did you learn your lesson on backing up the database? ;)

@dave: how does one backup one's database?

@cesman: thanks for the link, eventhough you told me before, I'm one of those learn-the-hard-way people I guess :) mythfilldatabase is *still* running on my master. I think it'll finish around 9:30 (over 2 hours).

I reset the values in mythtv-setup on the frontend box to 127.0.0.1 -- how was the frontend able to nuke the settings on the backend?

Because it wasn't a frontend but a slave backend. It was probably set to over ride the master backend. Again you are running mythtv-setup on the frontend. DON'T RUN MYTHTV-SETUP ON A FRONTEND ONLY setup.

You're welcome. The docs are there, please read them... If you don't understand ask.

I printed the pdf version of the docs and read through it before I installed knoppmyth a few months ago. I think one of the biggest obstacles to LINUX for newbies like me is that wording of the docs. They are written for the learned LINUX user in my opinion. Something like the mythtv howto should be dumbed down and targeted at people who haven't used the OS before. I think that statement is true for lots of LINUX howtos.

Well, I don't think the wording is going to change any time soon! The only way to learn is by trial and error. This forum is a fantastic source for help. Thanks to all who contribute!

Through webmin, or from the command line with:
Code:
mysqldump --opt -u mythtv -p mythconverg > /home/mythtv/mythconvergbackup.sql

When prompted, enter the password that lives in mysql.txt
