Hello,

I've got a Pentium 4 1.4GHz computer, with 254MB of RAM, GForce 2 and a wireless PCI card.
And of course, no SCSI/SATA or Slave HDs.

I've been trying for some days to install KnoppMyth, but with no succeess.
I do the Auto Install, everything is OK during the install, it formats, copy the files, and then says it's done, and then I press Enter, it ejects the CD and reboots itself.
When it's loading it says something like "Lilo loading..." for about a one-two seconds, and then it shows a simple black screen, it stays like that for a while, and then the computer just turns off.

I've tried to install for about 5-6 times, and even tried to burn some install CDs on low speeds.

Does anybody got a clue? Have found nothing on Google. :(

Thanks.

Interesting... Can you disable ACPI in the BIOS?

Hi Izikd,

Can we assume a single ide 10 gig or greater hard drive, jumpered as master and no usb stuff plugged in? Do you have a tuner card? (not required, add it later ) What version are you trying to install? R5A16 is a very good choice :)

Just some dumb questions, but I try to keep things simple so I can understand.

Thanks
Mike

Hello,
and thanks for your replies.

cesman,
I cann't disable the ACPI, I only can change the state (1 or 3), I've tried that, and nothing.

mjl,
I've got no USB stuff, and no slave HDs, just one single HD.
I've already tried to install it on 20GB and 80GB (WD) HD jumpered as singles.
At this I've got no tuner card :(
And yes, I use the latest version, R5A16.

Thanks you both :)

Hi Izikd,

Good feedback, Give us all the dirt on the hardware as this is not a normal problem that I have seen or heard of. Granted I only seen a few however, some things are just common factors.

Hi Izikd,
Well, this is perplexing, nothing really odd except video & wireless

I would try first swap out the video card, and dump the wireless till you are up and running. Add things later, one at a time.

Second, I would try a re-install as an Auto Upgrade. Possible the mbr (master boot record) was written improperly.

IF you have tried install on both drives and both are in the machine as master / slave, go to single drive. I have never been able to boot with two myth setup drives. It takes a bootable dos floppy with fdisk to clear the mbr (a hidden tool).

Hope this is of value.

Amm... interesting...

I've tried to Auto Upgrade, tried to dump out the wireless, and swap the video card.
I work only with one HD at each time.

Finally I tried to install it on other computer, and guess what, it doesn't work there too.

What can it be? :|
Maybe should I try to install previous version?

Hi Izikd,

I would have to think at this point that you have a defective down load of the R5A16 iso. There is some place on the forum that tells how to check it with a md sum. I would suggest that "while you are downloading a fresh iso" that you search for that check procedure. You will probably have the new iso before you find the check method :)

Go for a full auto install and let us know how things go.

OK, the CD was currepted, so now everything works fine, thanks you all :D

Now I got some new problems:
1. I can't configure the wireless card (Edimax EW-7128G)
2. And I got not TV-out with my GeForce 2 MX

Help still needed :)

Hi Izikd,

That is good news that a new download got you started. As for the wireless, use the Google link to find some assistance. In between time, use a wired network card. Open an xterm, change to root $ su - (super secret admin passwd) then run # netcardconfig and it should be good to go.

As for tv out, that is a new ball game also, however, referring back,

I would think there should not be tv out :)

At this point, you should have, information, weather, web browser, music, and images. Take each one in step, go through the set-up, and map everything to /myth/tv /myth/music/ /myth/gallery/ /cache/cache/ as appropriate. Read the "pamphlet" and check out Xsecret's wiki http://knoppmythwiki.org/?id=KnoppmythWiki .

If you setup an account with labs.zap2it.com (use the special code key) then you can also have a tv listing guide. Send us a note in a week or two with a status!

Free tip, after doing any setup tweaks in the menus, do a backup. Then if you need to do an upgrade later on, most of your settings are retained. Very handy :)

Enjoy the new venture.
Mike

tvout has a page on the wiki.

wireless cards are a bit more difficult, as there is no one set easy standard way to do it since they all use different drivers (if a driver is even available for linux) and have their own set of instructions to get it going. some drivers are included in knoppmyth, but not all. There are several threads on the forums about different wireless cards.

Hey there,

Another newb here, with that darn black screen problem. Here's the situation:

- I run the R5A16 KnoppMyth CD.
- I choose the 'Auto Install' option.
- It asks me some date/time and user/password info, loads, and then asks me to eject CD and restart.
- Once restarted, LILO begins loading with a whole bunch of text scrolling by on the screen. At the very end it says something about GNOME starting, and that's where I get the black screen. (Before choosing i686 or whatever; haven't seen that yet).

From reading other posts, here is what I have done thus far:

- I can CRTL+ALT+F1 and get back to the screen with the text. (Very last line says something like 'gdm started' or something).
- I then have tried installing the nvidia drivers from the appropriate location (both the 6639 and 7174 versions; can't remember the ver #s exactly). *
- I have looked at the x86config file (is that right?) but didn't know what to do in there.

* One quick note: Upon 'installing' the nvidia drivers (either one) the last line of script when it is done says something like, "clock skew detected". Don't know if this is relevant, but I will include it here.

Anyways, so that is where I am at. Any information/insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, here is my hardware setup:

Proc: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2ghz, 400fsb)
Mobo: Biostar M7NCD
RAM: Kingston 2 x 512 pc3200 (1 gb total)
HDrive: Maxtor 300GB (Pri Master)
Video: Rosewill (Nvidia) GeForce FX5200 128MB 8xAGP
Capture: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250
