Hello,

The original system specs I posted turned out to be mostly dead pieces of equipment. Dead motherboard, hard disk so it goes like this now:

ASRock P4VM8
Samsung 80gb SATA2
ASUS 16x DVD-ROM
Pentium 4 1.6
Chaintech 7.1 Soundcard
ASUS V9400-X/TD GEFORCE MX 4000
512mb of Hynix RAM

I realise that I have to go through a manual install because I'm using an SATA drive, but when I try to partition it, I get the error message:

Opened disk read only you have no permission

After which I get a fatal error and I get bumped back to the Partition dialogue.

Help? Please? Sweet JESUS!

Do you have another live CD you can use to try and partition the drive?

Nope, I don't. Should I just format it using Debian and then install KnoppMyth?

Or when you get to the Install screen of Knoppmyth, hit ctrl-alt-f2 and then format the disk from there.

After you hit cntrl-alt-f2, what would you type in to format the ide drive that's going to be used for knoppmyth. I am still trying to get my 200gb ide drive to boot after installation of the 5A22 - it did the same thing when I was trying version R5A16. It recognizes all the optical drives and the hard drive when it goes through hardware recognition before autoinstall but then at the end of install says it's having trouble unmounting before it says installation complete. I take the cd out and the system reboots to the dreaded blinking cursor. Is there anyway this could have something to do with the Master Boot Record, the drive used to be used with Windows. Also - can my problem be arrising due to the capacity of the hard drive - I'm reading different things that talk about problems with larger drives sometimes but I thought that might be for older systems.I just don't know enough about what it could be - I'm a newbie and hate that feeling of being lost.

I was searching the forum and ran accross this thread. I have the exact same formatting problem, only I'm using standard IDE drives. A 4gig on /dev/hda unpartitioned for /root, a 120gig on /dev/hdc partitioned into a 512meg swap, 6gig /cache, and the rest for /myth. I also have an 80 gig drive on /dev/hdd that I'll eventually want to use LVM to combine into the /myth directory.

I can't get access to format or partition the drives either. Any suggestions?

You do realize that /root is different from / right? Did you reboot? In some cases, a reboot is need for the partition table to take effect.

yes, i meant / not /root. Mental error as I always SAY "root" when referring to /.

Also tried rebooting.

Got a little further. Had to use a win98 boot disk to manually delete all partitions, then use the partitioner on the knoppmyth cd. The install finishes with a bunch of errors that fly by the screen in diagonals that go too fast for me to read. After that it says the installation was successful. I reboot and nothing. No boot. I saw a different thread addressing that so I'll move my n00bself over there.

thanks for the help!
