Well, then (this is just in general) if Linux does not support your SATA chipset directly, then the other option is to make it look like PATA in BIOS.

Here is a site with linux support for SATA that may help you see if your pundit's chipset contains on this:

I have a similar motherboard (Asus K8N4E Deluxe, nForce4 chipset), and get the kernel panic when booting from the nVidia sockets.

Booting from the Sil ports doesn't seem to be an option. If I hit F8 to get to the boot menu it isn't listed (just the other drive on nvidia and a small borrowed drive on IDE).

The Sil chip is enabled. No RAID is configured (I want to use RAID 1, but that might be a bit ambitious as I can't get much working).

Did you do anything in particular to be able to boot from the Sil interfaces?
