errors right from the start on a new install.

Post subject:  errors right from the start on a new install.
I get this error, after I've set my password and user name... on the last conformation screen on a new install.

After the error I get a prompt.

/usr/local/bin/KnoppMyth-auto:line 608: / 1000000: syntax error: operand expected (error token is "/ 1000000")


Just for history on the machine.
I've reformatted the hard drive and burnt a new copy of KnoppMyth.

AMD Athlon XP 1800
Asus A7V8X
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250
512Megs
120 Gig Maxtor Hard Drive
52x CD Rom => not that it matters.

Did you verify the MD5SUM? I suggest reburning at a lower speed.

Yup MD5 verified and burnt at 12x... still same error.
Do you think it could be one of my answers?
What else can I try as a test? I have a few hard drives and such I could try swapping out.

I thought I got some similar error messing when installing to a SCSI drive. mine happened sooner in the process... right after confirming my selections I think. Sounds like yours doesn't happen until after the install.

Did you try R4V2 or R4?

You may want to test your memory using memtest86 .. I think I had similiar errors when initially installing. I ran the memtest and found I was getting tons of errors. I throttled my memory settings way back, and all is well.

What is the difference between r4v2 and just r4?
what one is better?

Well, R4V2 (release 4 version 2) is "better" in that it contains mythtv version 0.14 and several bug fixes. R4 uses an older version of mythtv (0.12) as well has contains some bugs. I don't know that the install is different, but you'd probably wanna be using the most up-to-date release of mythtv.

where is your hard drive? Is it on a raid controler? If so you will get the same errors as if you were trying to install on a scsi drive the knoppmyth install script is set up to expect one harddrive connected to the primary master ide connector. If that is not your setup you will have to do a manual install. I think I've heard roumors that this is being looked at for R5, but that may be a blatant untruth.

This is the same error that I encountered when trying to install to a VMWare virtual machine (which exposes the disk as a SCSI device).

I popped into the installer and it appears to be caused by the auto-partioning code trying to divied a nil value to determine the partition sizes to create.

What I had to do was copy the install script and the actual config file to /tmp and run it from there. The install script needed to have the config file location adjusted to /tmp and the config file had to have /dev/hda changed to /dev/sda (in my case).

Most users install to a primary IDE drive so I'd imagine that cesman/Dale chose that default to catch probably 95% of the users out there. The remaining 5%, who are experienced enough to be using SCSI/RAID/etc. can probably hack the scripts themselves like I described (at least that's my thinking on what they were thinking ;) )

Hey man good call.. My hard drive was on the RAID controller.
I had done some tape swapping trying to install a DVD burner and I moved the hard drive on to the RAID motherboard plug.
I totally took everything off the board all the way down the ram and then put everything back in, after I read your reply and now it works perfectly.
