Post subject: | initrd and install questions |
Hi folks, I'm trying to install R5A22 to an epia box using a 2GB thumb drive as the only storage. I know this isn't highly supported, but I already have a separate backend, and I'm going to use wireless to get to it (which, when last I checked, made minimyth a non-starter) from this front-end only box. So my questions are: What kernel should I be trying to use? I've got a 2.6.13-chw-3 as the default when I just coppied over the cd's KNOPPIX partition to the thumb drive. But it seems that that kernel isn't set up for initrd use, and I need initrd to load the usb-storage drivers to prevent the kernel panic I get now when it can't find the root partition. Am I missing something obvious. Because I'm not using swap, and don't want 4 partitions, I don't seem to be able to use the built-in installers. So I'd like to get an idea what the default install routine is. I looked at KnoppMyth-install, but either I can't see the functional code for all the dialog stuff, or it's not there. Can anyone point me to the parts that actually do the install, so I can make sure what I do manually is the same as the system would do. Thanks, Erission |

One doesn't have to create four partitions. You can try, booting off the CD. Modprobe the needed USB modules and do a manual install. |

ok, neat. For some reason, when I partition the drive with 1 partition, it never lets me choose anything but Partition and Quit. I was assuming it required either swap or extra partitions. I don't think I need any extra modules, seeing as it's able to partition, mkfs, and mount the drive with no problem. if it matters, it shows up as /dev/sda1 Any ideas why it's not letting me continue? or where to change the code to skip the partition step? Thanks |
