I think anyway... I got through the install off CD. (it should be in the instructions that your HD has to be the primary master...) Anyway.. It boots up and all, but it doesent seem to load any channels, and i am getting errors about the library libXvMCNVIDEA_dynamic.so.1 cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. I currently have a gforce2GTS in there (asus brand) which i think has XvMC support. Am i wrong? I also have a gforce 4 MX440 here if the GTS is the problem, but it is still new in the box, and id rather not open it if the GTS will work. I think I have two problems at least though, the shared library, and the sql server not getting channels.. Once I get into the app, the weather works, but that seems to be it. I assume that means the network is working fine.. What should I be checking for to fix this? The rest of the comp is: P4 1.5 384MB ram 60 gig HD for now. geforce2GTS video avermedia 179-d capture card. (My friend told me i will have driver issues with this card, true? He gave me drivers that should work though.) I assume that bad drivers for the capture card should not affect it getting channel info.. One more stupid question, does the sql server get the info on the channels from the net? or does it have to be connected to the cable as well? Thanks for your time... |

Did you search these forums? You should do the steps to complete the successfull installation of the channel guide. Search for it. You can't watch tv until you get xmltv updated and running. Did you run the nvidia installation script? That's in the FAQ. Read that. Hope that helps! |

the xvmc error is because you have not run the install-nvidia.sh script. If you have also not updated xmltv then run the nvidia script first. then update xmltv. then you need to go through the setup and define your video source. It pulls the info from the net. It does not rely on the cable connection whatsoever. (well unless your net connection is a cable modem, but that's not a direct connection bah anyways I digress.) oh and you could get rid of the xvmc error by not running an xvmc compiled mythtv. |

OK.. I am making progress. I now have all my channels loaded in for the next 9 days. Now I am having issues that when I reboot the machine, it comes up with the mythtv startup screen, but the backend doesent seem to be running. When i restart it by hand i get the following error: sh-2.05b$ mythbackend Starting up as the master server. Error getting inputs for the capturecard. Perhaps you have forgotten to bind video sources to your card's inputs? 2004-02-11 20:49:52 CheckChannel failed. Please verify channel "3" in the "setup" Channel Editor. is defined, but isn't attached to a cardinput. 2004-02-11 20:49:52 mythbackend version: 0.14.20040123-1 www.mythtv.org 2004-02-11 20:49:52 Enabled verbose msgs : important general 2004-02-11 20:49:55 Found changes in the todo list. invalid cardid -1 I have compiled the driver for my card, but im not sure if I "installed" it. does a "make install" necessarily install the driver? Im not sure what these particular errors mean to go look at. I definately have a channel 3 downloaded. Stupid question. Is there a way to switch between an xterm and mythtv? I keep exiting out of mythtv, or using the pure text versions ctrl-alt-f1 blah blah. ANyway, thanks for your time... RAD |

Some folks have... I have one and have had intermittent success with it. If you are using R4V2, then the ivtv drivers are already patched for the M179. |

I am using R4v2. So then all i have to do is the binding. Ill play around with it, and ask for more detailed instructions if/when I get stuck again. Thank you for your time. RAD |

OK i tried binding the video source to the card, or something... Im a little confused about how to do this exactly. Let me tell you what I have done. When i go to the setup, under the general tab, i set both IPs to the box's current IP. Under the capture cards, I click New Capture Card There i have the choices "Standard V4l capture card", "MJPEG capture card", or "MPEG-2 Encoder card". As the capture card i have was given to me, im not sure of which it actually is. I picked Standard V4I capture card, and left the defaults for the other settings. Except for the Default Input, which I set to tuner, which i assume means in through the coax connection. Under video sources, i entered my zip code, and called the name "cable" It sucessfully fount bright house, and got the channel info for the next 9 days, when i ran mythfilldatabase or whatever under input connections, I selected the cable video source for the [V4l:/dev/video] (Tuner:0) The channel editor has hundreads of channels in it, so i left it alone. After running the mythtv frontend: I click TV, then WatchTV and the screen goes black for like 5 seconds or so, with just a little green line at the top, maybe 2 pixels thick, and im assuming green as im more than a little red/green colorblind. It then drops back to the main blue choosery screen. upon exiting the prog, the xterm says: sh-2.05b$ mythfrontend 2004-02-12 18:34:40 mythfrontend version: 0.14.20040123-1 www.mythtv.org 2004-02-12 18:34:40 Enabled verbose msgs : important general 2004-02-12 18:34:41 Registering Internal as a media playback plugin. 2004-02-12 18:34:42 Registering MythMusic Media Handler as a media handler 2004-02-12 18:34:46 Connecting to backend server: 192.168.0.74:6543 (try 1 of 5) 2004-02-12 18:34:54 ReadStringList timeout (quick). 2004-02-12 18:34:54 Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION: 2004-02-12 18:34:54 Changing from None to None 2004-02-12 18:36:31 Connecting to backend server: 192.168.0.74:6543 (try 1 of 5) 2004-02-12 18:36:39 ReadStringList timeout (quick). 2004-02-12 18:36:39 Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION: What is the deal oh all knowlegable ones? One more thing, what is the appropriate command for determining the IP of the box, I have been using: sh-2.05b$ ip addr 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo 2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 100 link/ether 00:03:47:42:b2:ce brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.0.74/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global eth0 and assuming the IP is 192.168.0.74 Am I right? The capture card is a MPEG-2 hardware encorder. |

Swapped that, and set the default to tuner, with the tuner hooked to the video source.. Start the frontend, and get the same black screen. Is there some way to check if the card is working without mythtv? Maybe accessing the device directly? RAD |

cat /dev/video0 > first_capture.mpg Press <CTRL><C> and use mplayer to view the capture. In addition, did you do step four in the setup? You must assign tuner to your xmltv source. I you have question on setting up mythtv, I suggest you read the mythtv docs. |

I had done that. (set the xmltv source to the tuner.) When fooling around earlier, i had randomly clicked to record a show, and this last time I started up the backend, it started recording it. I thought, interesting, I wonder if it is getting anything. I looked in the myth.tv dir and there was a honkin ol file, mplayer showed that it was a valid video with sound! cat /dev/video0 > outp.mpg works as well. When I click on tv watch tv though it bombs out with the following: mythfrontend 2004-02-12 20:28:19 mythfrontend version: 0.14.20040123-1 www.mythtv.org 2004-02-12 20:28:19 Enabled verbose msgs : important general 2004-02-12 20:28:20 Registering Internal as a media playback plugin. 2004-02-12 20:28:20 Registering MythMusic Media Handler as a media handler 2004-02-12 20:28:23 Connecting to backend server: 192.168.0.74:6543 (try 1 of 5) 2004-02-12 20:28:23 Using protocol version 1 2004-02-12 20:28:23 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2004-02-12 20:28:23 adding: mythtv as a client (events: 0) 2004-02-12 20:28:23 Using protocol version 1 2004-02-12 20:28:23 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2004-02-12 20:28:23 adding: mythtv as a client (events: 1) 2004-02-12 20:28:23 Using protocol version 1 2004-02-12 20:28:23 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2004-02-12 20:28:23 adding: mythtv as a client (events: 0) 2004-02-12 20:28:23 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2004-02-12 20:28:23 adding: mythtv as a client (events: 0) 2004-02-12 20:28:23 adding: mythtv as a remote ringbuffer 2004-02-12 20:28:23 Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV Input #0, mpeg, from 'rbuf://192.168.0.74:6543/cache/cache/ringbuf5.nuv': Stream #0.0: Video: mpegvideo_xvmc, 480x480, 29.97 fps Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s 2004-02-12 20:28:25 Opening OSS audio device '/dev/dsp'.
