Can anyone give me a pointer on how to install/run KDE 3 on Knoppmyth? So far I have done the following:

apt-get update
apt-get install kde

The first time it exited with an error. Figuring that could be due to my internet connection I ran apt-get install kde again and it seems to have installed ok. Now if I exit mythtv, exit fvwm and get back to the x login screen I have a KDE choice in the Session menu but if I choose this and then login I end up back in mythtv! I guess that KDE is running some sort of start up script which it picked up somewhere which runs mythtv for me... any clues as to which files to look at?

Installing KDE...It is simply don't. It can break the system and I don't recommend it.

Oh... Ok. Thanks for the heads up.

What about other desktops - Gnome? The thing is that I'm a linux newb and so is my husband. He'd like a pretty desktop with menus and stuff that he can muck around with. At the moment another computer isn't an option (we're stuck overseas and don't need more junk) so I want to try and install a 'normal' desktop on the myth machine for him to use. Any hints?

I've never tried to use or install another desktop. When I started working on KnoppMyth, I envisioned installing it on a machine dedicated to act as a set-top box. For this, I wanted a lightweight windows manager hence FVWM.

well my guess is that kde is fine, but you are still using the gdm login manger with the default knoppmyth settings so it logs you into fvwm and starts mythtv by default. I have not looked at this myself this is just conjecture from my experiance with knoppmyth and debian.
