Post subject:  "Upgrade" warning question...

I have encountered an issue that _might_ be addressed by updates in the newer release, as I believe that the underlying code has been updated twice, so I was about to perform an update to R4V2 from R4.

I was OK with most of the Warning messages, until after I had entered my user information, etc and was about to start the actual update. At that point a warning poped up that hda1 was going to be completely overwritten, meaning that all data would be lost.

Now hda2 is my virtual memory, hda3 is my cache, and hda4 is my /myth partition, so I realize that my captured videos, music, and transcoded movies are all "safe" at this point, except that I am under the impression (possibly mistaken) that the database holding information on all of these files is on hda1, under either the /home/mythtv directory, or possibly under the /var/mysql folder. Additionally I strongly suspect that all of my scheduled recordings in the future will have to be re-programmed.

The only thing I can think of off hand that would not be affected is my Music files with ID3 tags. If I am mistaken, please let me know. How have people been affected by upgrades?

I personally don't like the idea of re-compiling my lirc_streamzip driver recreating the button mapping for it, and so on. This does not seem to me to be a simple "dump the database to a folder and reload it once you have done the update" upgrade. I understand I may have to re-compile anyway, as the streamzip file I have is tied to the kernel I am running, and it isn't a standard element of the LIRC standard builds, but this "upgrade" will delete all the files I need to build it as well, meaning I have to re-collect those files. Not a major issue for me, but I suspect it may be for other people.

If I am mistaken, and files that "I" have edited and created are left alone, then the warning that 'all files and directories on hda1' are going to be overwritten, needs to be corrected.

Yes hda1 is wiped cleaned. The db is dumped to /myth/backup as is /home and /etc. /home is restored /etc is not. Since the kernel is the same in R4 and R4V2 you can copy the module to /myth/backup and copy it back after updating.

Sounds good. I think I will wait till Tuesday though, as I just ordered to pvr250's and once I see the putty/grey remote, I may choose that instead of the Streamzap.

If I do go that way, I would be happy to donate mine for you to test with. I won't know however till I get the pvr250s though, so I will let you know then.
