Post subject:  Monitor goes into standby mode after install...

ok, what im trying to do is to at least get linux/mythtv booting before i go and spend any money on this system (will probably buy a pvr250, vid card w/ tvout and soundcard)...

here's my current setup:
athlon 600
fic sd11 mobo
512mb ram
maxtor 25gb
nvidia geforce1 (elsa erazor x)
dlink dfe-530tx nic
no sound
no tv in or out cards

keep in mind that im a complete linux noob (i can navigate the fs and create and edit files in vi, thats about it).

so whats happening is, i use autoinstall, it does its thing, i remove the cd, reboot, then i see it initializing devices and whatever, then at the point where i should get a gui, screen goes blank and monitor goes into standby mode. i then hit ctrl+alt+f1 and i see all the initialization stuff and a command line login. i login as root and install-nvidia.sh. that does its thing, then dumps me back into a command line. i reboot and end up with the monitor going into standby mode again and having to ctrl+alt+f1 to get it working again, but no gui, just command line login prompt.

oh, and for some reason, im not getting any internet connection on the machine... if i manually assign an IP addy in ifcfg-eth0, i can get it to ping machines on my local network, but nothing outside of it. i went ahead and installed redhat9 on the machine to make sure the ethernet card wasn't bad and that found it w/ no problem and everythign worked great. so now im back to knoppmyth r4v2 on the box and no gui and no internet.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Not sure how much help I will be, but here goes....

Question on the gforce1 card, does it have an svideo out port on the back? If so, then (possibly) the system thinks it should be using that port, with output going to a TV. In that case the monitor would switch to standby, though I don't know why you would be able to get text mode out of it.

I was going to suggest the install-nvidia script, but it appears you have run it.

The only other possibility that occurs to me at the moment is that the video mode that the card is switching to is not supported by the monitor. You may have to hard code the resolution to 800x600x24 (or 16 or 32) to see if that works. One test for this would be to use the [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Grey+] and [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Grey-] key controls to cycle through the video modes to see if an alternative mode works. From my quick checks, the ctrl and alt keys in question are the left ones, not the right. The [Grey+] and [Grey-] keys are the [+] and [-] keys on the numeric keypad. If you are using a mini keyboard without a seprate numeric keypad, you may have to use the [fn] key as well to get to the [+] and [-] keys.

Without hardcoding the IP address in ifcfg-eth0, do you get anything when you type ifup eth0 at the root comand prompt [#] ? I have one system that refuses to automatically bring up the ethernet interface when it boots, however 'ifup eth0' seems to solve the problem. I even hard coded that into my /etc/init.d/network file in the 'start)' section. This is not on my MythTv box, so I am only offering it as an idea.

Good luck,

-Rusty

I'm having the same issue. After installation when it attempts to go to the MythTV GUI, it pops to a resolution my monitor apparently can't handle. The signal out to my tv is likewise unreadable.

I've tried cycling the resolutions with CTRL-ALT-+ to no avail.

Pentium 3 733
Hauppauge WINTV 250
Asus GeForce FX 5200 - S Video to TV

I've tried typing "tv" at the bootup screen when running the cd but that doesn't seem to help.

Any ideas? Sorry if I'm leaving out vital clues. I'm very new to Linux.

Try this for your Nvidia setup. The Install script wouldn't work for me.

http://www.podtronics.com/knoppmyth/FAQ.htm#How%20do%20I%20install%20the%20drivers%20for%20my%20nVidia%20card

Also, it looks like you can get to a shell so, as root, type: netcardconfig and you should be able to setup your network card.

well, the ctrl+alt+(plus/minus keys) worked. and once i got the gui working, everything else just sort of fell into place :)

so i went out and bought a pvr250 today and plan on installing it either later tonight or tomorrow.

Running the nVidia driver install script helped. I now have a viewable image on my TV... sort of.

As I boot up I get text on both my monitor and my TV.

Once the GUI loads, I get a nice clean image on my TV and I'm able to work with Myth. But the pc monitor shuts off.

If I exit Myth, the TV becomes unreadable (like the refresh is off) and I still get no image on the monitor.

I'm a little stuck because I can't get to a prompt to be able to do any file editing. Any ideas?

by unreadable you mean it's just a solid purple screen? if so then just click on the desktop and choose xterm.
