I'm trying to install knoppmyth on vmware but I'm hitting a snag and I'm hoping someone else has already figured out how to do this. I am doing the following:

- Copying /usr/local/bin/Knoppmyth-auto and the config file in /KNOPPIX (I think) to /tmp

- Modify any hda references in those two files to be sda

- Modify Knoppmyth-auto so that it points to the config file in /tmp

I complete the install but when I boot I get the following kernel panic:

VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or unknown-block(8,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

Questions:
- In what file do I append the correct the "root=" boot option?
- How can I boot linux to some type of "safe mode" so that I can edit this file?
- Any idea what the correct boot option would be?

I've tried doing manual installs vs the regular automated install, I've tried using the mbr vs partition (that doesn't work either but gives some really really strange errors), etc but can't find the right combination.

Thanks

That is the wrong place to start a VMWare discussion... I should have deleted it... Unless VMWare will allow linux to "see" your tv tuner, I wouldn't advice using it. The last time I used VMWare was years ago and it didn't allow the hosted OS to see the all the hardware.
