hi,

i'm preparing to have a go with KnoppMyth R4V2 as a complete install, and i have a few questions regarding updating...

i have a PVR350 "in the mail" and have been dligently reading up on the ins and outs of getting the PVR350's ins and outs to work. so far i have been playing around with R4 on my PC, sans capture card. i understand that PVR350 TV-out support in KnoppMyth is "not quite there", yet. of course, this is not just a function of KnoppMyth but also the infancy of the PVR350 drivers (e.g. ivtv). that said, i have a few basic questions that revolve around updating modules as they evolve. pardon my newbie-ness if you will.

1) from the mythTV front end GUI, is it possible to determine what modules and what versions are currently installed?
2) from the shell, what is the best way to determine what modules and what versions are currently installed? does $ dpkg -l "myth*" give me everything i need to know? (maybe we need knoppmyth_get_inventory.sh?)

just a side note: from this page,
http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html
and this page
http://hust.la/KnoppMyth/
it's not clear what versions are included in R4V2. or maybe i missed that info. specifically, what version of ivtv is included with R4V2? with that info in hand, i can go back to http://ivtv.sourceforge.net/ and figure out what's not going to play on my PVR350 post installing R4V2.

oh, one last question regarding R4V2 modules... with R4 there was a need to update xmltv before you could get off the ground. is this still the case with R4V2? or is it a good idea to update anyways?

onward. from this post, http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=629, it would appear that once KnoppMyth-flavor debs have been made (by some kind soul) of newly released modules (e.g. ivtv), it is possible to update these modules without waiting for the Next Release(tm) of KnoppMyth. true? otherwise, one has to get the correct tar.gz for the module, and manually compile/install it. now then, does manually installing a module from source break some KnoppMyth-level dependencies? it would appear not from http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=623 but on the the other hand i notice a lot of folks have trouble with the debs. to best avoid MythTVBrick, is it best to compile source or apt-get update?

as you can see, i'm diligently trying to figure out how to take advantage of the work that you guys have done in packaging MythTV, but at the same time i realize that some of the underpinnings have to be upgraded to fix bugs, add features etc.

thanks for any suggestions. one suggestion might be "wait a [hour|day|week] and just install R5" but i have not seen an expected release date for R5.

thanks and regards,
jim

KnoppMyth includes all the modules but MythBrowser. If one chooses to install from source, KnoppMyth includes all dependecies needed for one to do so. We usually try and produce debs for the latest releases of MythTV as soon as it is released. Then we have a few folks try it out then we release to all. The main menu will only show modules that are installed, dpkg -l | grep myth is all you need. http://mysettopbox.tv/CHANGELOG.txt
