Hi All,

I've seen this problem for the past 3 install attempts.

I've been running R5A16 with few problems.

However, when I tried to upgrade to R5A22 R5A26, and now R5A30.1 about the point in the auto upgrade or auto install, the cd drive seems to slow down to a crawl. I've been just killing the process and re-attempting the auto upgrade. Then when that didn't work, I'd say ok, lets do the auto install. Same response.
(btw, when I used the R5A16, no such slow down, so it isn't the hardware.)
Well last night, I didn't want to re-install R16, thought I'd get to it tonight. When I woke up, the process says 88% complete. WTF!
So if I get home and the auto install says it's finished, ok. but any ideas as to why this is happening? And i'm reasonably certain it's not the cds. I have downloaded both 26 and 30.1 from two different sites and got the same results with all 5 of those cds. (1 22, 2 26 and 2 30.1)

thanks in advance.

Have you got a spare CD drive you could try in ur mythbox? It could be the drive is on the way out and having problems reading the discs.

I don't think so, that's why I mentioned it works fine and installs quickly with A16. It also plays dvds and cds just fine.

But keep those ideas coming, this is really blowing my mind... I'd check the checksums, but I got to admit, I don't know how... :oops:

Someone more knowledgeable: Does the knoppmyth install enable DMA access for drives? If its supposed to, is there any way to check if it worked or not?

it is supposed to. To check you use hdparm. as root

hdparm /dev/hda

hda = primary master hdb = primary slave hdc= secondary master hdd = secondary slave. If you have sata then I think it's sda though you would already know, because of the hacks necessary to install on sata.

my output looks like this.
Code:
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 24321/255/63, sectors = 200049647616, start = 0

to change the settings you use switches which are -d = dma -c = 32bit io -k = keep settings (doesn't usually work) -m = multicount -u = unmaskirq

for instance to turn on 32bit io and unmaskirq on my drive I would run

hdparm -c 1 -u 1 /dev/hda

I suppose it's possible, but the last 5 disks?

how do I use a checksum to make sure the burn or iso is, in fact, up to snuff?

joelb

I'm burning them on a mac, but my windows box also can burn, and so can the KnoppMyth box, but I don't have a clue how to use a check sum to actually do the verify on any of those platforms....

You know, I would normally agree with all the suggestions about a bad burn with this behavior, but I have been having the same problem...exactly. The hang on 7% caught my eye.

I downloaded A30, the checksum was fine, I burned, tried to install, and I got what I thought was a hang at 7%. I restarted after it stayed at 7% for 5 mins. That usually means a bad burn or other type of failure. Tried again and same thing. Then I tried to go back to my A26 install which had gone over with Tier 1 success when it first came out. Only reason I was messing with it was that the box had frozen after being on for a month. It had recorded about 180G worth of programming. Hated to lose all that.... Same thing, hang at 7%. Now I was worried. I was running 2 160G Seagate drives in LVM on my last install, so I thought one had failed. I bought a new 160G to replace ($39 at Fry's after rebates!). Tried to install on the new drive and got the same hang at 7%. Now I was really worried. I tried a copy of Gentoo 2005.1 to partition the drive into a similar hda1/2/3/4 like knoppmyth uses. No problem. Then I tried to format the partitions. I got a segfault that completely bombed the system formatting hda4. Swapped to a different drive and same deal. I don't have experience troubleshooting segfaults, so I thought I might have a failed motherboard.

Actually, I was just looking for an excuse to upgrade my Athlon 1600 to a low end 64 with a nForce3 motherboard. It arrives tomorrow.

I hate hijacked threads, but I think this is directly relevent. Anyone else see this? Solve this? When the new mboard gets here, I'll try again.

System includes Chaintech nif4, xp1600, 512M RAM, 2 160G Seagates (previously LVMed), PVR250 (980), chaintech av710 sound, fx5200 graphics. Nothing special and like I said, with a26 this was tier 1.

Mine used to hang using older versions of knoppmyth (R4) if I didnt specify vga=normal when booting the CD. Not always at 7% though.

e.g at the prompt I would type:
tv vga=normal
or
knoppmyth vga=normal

Havent had the problem with R5 though.

You can test the cd by using the testcd boot option. This is done similar to above but you type
tv testcd
or
knoppmyth testcd

Sure enough, the install was finished when I got home. #^%$*)_ Now I get the I cannot start the X server message, but I'll chase that down somewhere else.
