Post subject: | Manual install questions |
Hi All, I first tried to use the auto-install method but kept getting "block-major-3" error. After reading through the forum, I realize this is because I am using a SCSI disk instaed of an IDE disk. I then decided to try the manual install but some of the steps are not making sense. 1) I only see two options - and I pick to partition my drive. 2048 MB for root 256 MB for swap 5120 MB for cache 9999 MB for myth I then write out the partition table. I also run the following commands from the instructions: -> mke2fs -O sparse_super -m0 -i 8000000 -L cache -M /cache /dev/sda3 and mke2fs -j -O sparse_super -m0 -i 8000000 -L myth -M /myth /dev/sda4 2) Load config??? What does this mean? Load it into vi? Also, what config, are the instructions talking about the /KNOPPIX/knoppmyth file? I have also read in the forum about a ~/.knofig file but mine only has one line that says -> REGISTERED="" 3) Configure installation. ... Provide the requested information. What does this mean? Does it mean to edit the /KNOPPIX/knoppmyth file? How do I "Configure installation"? 4) Start installation. Again, I don't want to sound dumb but what does this mean, is it refering to running the KnoppMyth-install script? How do I get it to use my config file? Also, there is a note that refers to people with problems installing to HDA. I would assume this is my problem also since I am using SCSI (sda). The steps from the **NOTE** are 1) Save the configuration. Again, How? What configuration? 2) Remove /KNOPPIX/knoppmyth. How, it is a read only file that I can't chmod? 3) vi the file ( I assume the file from step 1 above ). 4) Change hda to hdb (or sda in my case). I think I can do this if I can figure out which file to change. 5) Load the configuration. Again, how? 6) start the installation. Again, how? I am sorry to ask so much in one question to the forum. Especially as a noob that has not yet helped anyone else but I would love to be able to work with Knoppmyth and the Auto-Install has not worked for me. Also, my system specs if anyone cares. Motherboard: ASUS P2B-DS CPU: 2 Pentium-II 400's Video: Matrox G400 with 32MB ram. DVD: Pioneer 1x slot loading DVD Sound: Diamond MX300 (aureal2) Soundcard. Thanks again for any help, jpummill |

Sorry, I cannot think of another way to simplify the instructions. If you follow them and do as it says you should have no problem. |

wow what tvcard are you using. I'm afraid that config is going to give you headaches all the way around. I'm not saing it can't be done, but it is going to be a royal pain. |

I don't even have the TV card installed right now. It is in another system. I don't remember the card right off the top of my head but I bought it at CompUSA for about 40 dollars and it came with PowerVCR-II or PVR-II software for windows. I think it was from I/O Magic. I would know more if at home where the other system is right now. I am thinking about replacing the G400 with an ATI 7500 All-In-Wonder. Would that be a better solution. |

You cannot use an All-in-Wonder as a tuner w/ MythTV. You [/]really[/i] should have a tuner that works w/ bttv or ivtv installed in the system when installing. |

This is heading away from Install problems but it is related to the last post by cesman. I am mainly wanting the ATI 7500 AIW or any other AIW card because of the RF remote. Is their any problem using that remote with other cards and tuners? I would think not but I think I should ask just to make sure. Also, is the AIW RF remote the best way to go (no line of site) or should I try to set up an IR remote? THanks again, Jpummill |
