So those of us who auto-upgraded to R5B7 from R5A22 are wasting the space of hda3, (formerly for the ringbuffer ?)

Hmmmnnn... Guess I'll 'iron out' things on this drive, then wipe one and clean install R5B7 on IT...
Thanks, Xsecrets ! :)

You can add the space from the old cache partiton to your root partition.

    - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD CURRENT BACKUP!

    - Boot from the CD and select manual install

    - Use the formatting utility (cfdisk) to delete the first 3 partions (do not touch hda4!!!) and recreate hda1 with most of the space and hda2 as swap with ~1.5x memory.

    - Quit, reboot from the CD, and do an auto upgrade.

This may be less than ideal since you probably don't need / to be that big. Other alternatives include copying all of your /myth partition to another disk or another box, and completely repartitioning the drive.

That you can do that is educational. As you noted, the space would be better applied to storing video.. I'll keep the contents of the auto upgrade expendable, 'til I get up the gumption to wipe the 250 hd of the old (working) A16 installation, and put the newer distro on it. Thanks again ! :)

When R5B7 was released, I wiped the drive and started over. I manually partitioned it, again, (choosing 5GB for /, 1.5GB for swap, and the rest for /myth). After installing and doing a df -k I found that, once again, Knoppmyth did not use my established partitions. (This time I also verified, per the "Pamphlet of KnoppMyth" page here, that the partitions were formatted and used the special instructions on the page.

I wiped again and chose the Automatic Install. This worked. However, I'd thought I read that swap was supposed to be 1-1/2 times physical memory. My RAM is 512 MB and the swap partition is only 598 MB! (I'd wanted to make swap larger as I planned to double my RAM. Oh well.)

I guess my question would be whether or not the swap size is hardcoded as well as the size for / since this happened, or if this was a fluke...
