When starting the install i get as far as:

INIT: version 2.78-knoppix booting

then i see:

BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0

Pid: 1195, comm: modprobe
EIP: 0060:[<c01260e1>] CPU:0
EIP is at __do_softirq+0x51/0xe0
EFLAGS: 000000282 Not tainted (2.6.15-chw-2)
.........(plus a load more)

And the system hangs.

Any ideas?

There is no way we can help you without knowing the details of your setup. Tell us what hardware are you using. Be as detailed as possible. Are you using some weird VIA or transmedia CPU?

Sure, apologies....

I'm running a AMD 450Mhz K6 (I'm not at my machine right now so i'll post the motherboard later), Matrox G450 Gfx card, and Maxdor 20gig hdd.

I've tried running about 10 times and it always fails at the same point with the same error.

Any help would be great!

Google spits up a bit when you feed it " BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0"

no answers that i could find, other than it appears to have showed
up with kernel 2.6.15. Using an an earlier version knoppmyth and then building the
0.19 debs as Cecil describes in the sticky in knoppmyth general, miight be the best
way for you to get on your feet using your existing hardware.
