Hardware configuration:

Epox 8K5A2+ motherboard KT333 chipset
Athlon 2100+
512MB RAM
Maxtor PATA 80GB HD at /dev/hda
LiteOn CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive

- Installing KnoppMyth R5A30.1
- Boot from CD and choose "Auto Install"
- Install completes successfully
- Upon reboot, see "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
- Boot the install disk and exit to shell
- #cfdisk shows /dev/hda1 not marked bootable
- mark bootable and reboot. Same failure
- boot the install disk, exit to shell
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
# chroot /mnt/hda1
# lilo -v 5
- /dev/hda1/etc/lilo.conf has "vga=normal" at the top. Problem???
- lilo runs fine
- reboot, same failure
- wipe MBR with #dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda count=1M bs=8 Drive was previously running SuSE 9.1 with GRUB, no problems booting.
- re-install, same failure

I've tried all of the following cable/jumper configs with re-installs after each:

IDE0: HD (master)
IDE1: CD (master)

IDE0: HD(master) CD(slave)

IDE0: HD(cable select) CD(cable select)

IDE0: HD(cable select)
IDE1: CD(cable select)

BIOS sees the HD and CD both with no problems. Marks 80GB Maxtor drive as IDE0 Primary Master in all cases.

That's all the information I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps setting your BIOS to boot from hard drive? Perhaps a search for 'chroot lilo mount'?

Sorry, forgot to include that information. I set the boot order in the BIOS to HDD-1, CD, none.

Searched and searched, which led me to try the above listed.

Well, if you installed to hda, why would you set the biso to boot from hdd-1?

I'm an idiot. If you want the computer to boot, apparently you have to tell the BIOS to boot from the correct drive! What a concept.

Thanks cesman. Sometimes you just need an outside perspective.

I had a very similur problem. Turns out it was somthing to do with my HD, I had it configured correctly just like you, and I couldn't get serveral vesions of Linux to boot, only Mandrake. But then I swaped HD and everything worked prefectly after that. so I'd start there

Mainboard MSI K7
WD 320 IDE as main disk on controller one.

Hi I have done a clean install of knoppmyth on a WD320 GHdisk
I did a auto install
WHen I reboot (check the bios for boor sequence its ok) it will not boot

then cfdisk and check the boot flag and toggle it to be on at HDA1
Did not help
rebootet the cd, whent out of the menu and
mount hda1
chroot hda1
I there took out the second line of lilo.conf but ti did not help..

AS I mention in other post I have no probllem running knoppix from cd or install knoppix to hd and use it (it uses grub)

I guess something is wrong in the lilo section.

If you run lillo -v in chroot, it will tell you if something is wrong w/ lilo.conf.
