Post subject:  SATA problem - kernel panics

In my search through old material I have found a similar problem that I am referencing here:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6212

I have an MSI K8NGM2-FID and am trying to install everything to a 500GB SATA drive. I can partition and do the basic install, but when I attempt to start it from the hard drive I get:

Code:
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Suspend2: Initrd lacks echo > /proc/suspend2/do_resume.
VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or unknown-block(8,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

It seems the previous poster fixed his issue by just using the SI controller instead of the Nvidia one... the MSI motherboard only uses the Nvidia controller, however, so I don't have that option.

My lilo.conf file seems to be looking pretty generic, it has root=/dev/sda1. This is a clean install with just the bare board and hard drive... I had heard that KnoppMyth was easy to use, after 8 hours of hassling with this I'm getting just a wee bit frustrated :P.

Any help would be appreciated!! I'm using latest version of Knoppmyth

you will have to use grub. You will probally have to use grub. The module for nvidia ata support is there. if you run the livecd and chroot into the installed dir and you

Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

Once the kernel menu comes up

Code:
 Device Drivers  --->
                             SCSI device support  --->
                             SCSI low-level drivers  --->
                             <M>   NVIDIA SATA support

I'm using that module and it works fine with my nforce4 chipset. I have a dfi motherboard. On nivida website you can download the linux drivers they offer.

But if you want to try out grub.

that is how I did it.
