**Warning**
*nix newb here. I am trying to learn linux and using mythTV as my goal. If you respond please spell things out for me including paths if applicable. Thanks..

Now I have mythtv running and all is well (R4V2). I got DVD playback working (I know that rip and playback are seperate). I have mtd running. When I try to rip, it will just sit there and say that there is no job. Its as if the MTD doesnt know that a dvd was inserted. Does this require some sort of automount? Is there somthing more I need to download that I missed along the way? Or perhaps somthing else I need to run? I have been searching these boards as well as the ones on the main mythtv site but to no avail...... Anyone have a suggestion? BTW ripping a dvd using a different combination of software is not an acceptable answer. I dont feel like using dvdxcopy on windows.....

I am just curious? what is mtd? I have been using mythtv for a while now and can rip dvd's just fine and I've never used anything called mtd, so you may be making it more complicated than it really is, however I suppose if you are trying to get all the menu's etc something else is required besides what comes in mythtv, and maybe that's where you came up with mtd.

I was under the impression that mtd is the myth transcode deamon, and that it is neccesary for the ripping of DVD's. Is this incorrect?

BTW I dont even care about menu's and such at this point. I just want to see somthing other then the "No Job......" text in the rip dvd page.

Try to hit 0 (zero) where you see your "no job... " message and see what it changes... had the same problem but am now stuck within the screen where one can select the titles (vob-files) to rip. When selecting the main film: how do I start the rip process now?

I can switch / select / deselect different options per title, browse titles with left/right cursor keys, etc. but finally, how do I start the ripping process?!? I'm sure I miss something really stupid, but I can't find it... :(

ok the myth transcode daemon well that has always just worked for me in the background from the getgo, so I've never had to worry about it other than on an old install I was doing on another distribution where I needed transcode.

when you get the screen no process found you hit 0 then once you choose the file you want to rip you hit 0 again and it will start. This confounded me for a long time too, and I actually sent an email to the mythv mailing list that the documentation or implementation should be improved, but no action was ever taken.

Yea I understand how it is suposed to work...but alas.. pressing 0 (zero) doesnt do anything for me. I mentioned the MTD just so people wouldnt say "You need to start the MTD" The log is not detecting a dvd in the drive as far as I can tell. Thanks for your reply's though.

the only other thing I could think is go to the setup dvd menu options and make sure everything is correct there. in mine its dev /dev/dvd and transcode.

I've seen this too on my install, even on my RH9 back-end, so it's not a knoppmyth issue.

It seems to be an issue with MTD, if you 'killall mtd' then go back to the rip screen, you get prompted to hit '0', then it's ok. It works the first time but something is happening to mtd after its been launched and used once.

Charles is also correct in his observation that it doesnt even probe the DVD drive, it doesnt even spin it up, it just sits there.

Interestingly, (another issue) mine will rip fine if told to do 'perfect', which is *not* transcoded in any way, but any other quality setting results in plenty of action from the box, and a temporary file but results in no outfile (and mtd.log says 'job completed successfully (!)) but no rip to be found anywhere on the filesystem!

I would suggest we seek a solution in the mythtv mail list archives as this must be a known bug or config issue.

Mart.

Perhaps, a search of mythtv user mailing list. Someone had this issue and Thor(the fellow the wrote MythDVD) offer advice on troubleshooting this... BTW:THIS DOESN'T BELONG IN INSTALLATION.

Yes I did search the mailing list, but to be sure of myself I did a reinstall and it worked after that... Go figure. I posted this here because I felt it could be an installation issue, because I am new to both myth and Linux. I see many of your posts claiming that "This does not belong here or there...", but you don’t suggest a better category. Perhaps in the future you could enlighten us as to the proper classification? Other then that thanks for the help.
