Hi there i got a bit of a problem.

I removed lirc installed lirc 0.8.0 and configured and compiled etc....

Anyway i finally got my computer to detect my reciever but when i run irw and i go mad pressing buttons with my packard bell remote and sky remote it just stays blank.

Im getting really confused on how to get this cheap remote running. Does anyone have or know of a simple to follow guide that hasnt been edited and confused by some loser like you get on the wiki documents.

Thanks

Hi there guys and gals i solved it now.

This is how it worked for me.

Step one.
Remove lirc by
Code:
apt-get remove lirc

Step two
lynx www.lirc.org and download lirc-0.8.0 then i untarred the file with help from the tar man pages

Step three
I copied over some premade /etc/lircd.conf and /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc (i found these from my friend google)

Step four
I then used nano to edit /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh to contain

setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
modprobe lirc_serial
/usr/local/sbin/lircd

.... at the bottom of the file

Step five
For some reason i took the hash away in /etc/modutils/lirc

so it looked like

add options lirc_serial sense=0

but i dont know what that does.

Then i found it worked, of course it was not that simple for me i done a lot of mucking about with irrecord, mode2, irw and general console playing about.

I wish there was a document as simple as this with no edit notes for each beta of mythtv (im using r5c7)

You do realize R5C7 already includes LIRC 0.8.0 don't you? The easy way would have been to work with what was installed, then provide details on how you got it work. This way, future releases would work with the remote (and you'd have contributed something back to the project).

only reason i reinstalled mythtv was because i got into such a mess with lirc i decided on a fresh install without having to reinstall knoppmyth again.

Im a mac user i dont know much about linux nor have i ever used the unix system that lays below all that fancy crap. lol

*edit* just remember the reason why i reinstalled lirc - it was so i could specify that my reciver address and irq and choose packard bell reciever in the configure option before make && make install. :D

While that old junk receiver/remote from PB should be avoided, since it works with Knoppmyth, can we move this post to Tier 2 instead of Tier 3?

I think these are <$15 shipped, and work well for the basic everyday functions of mythtv.

Although it is an option to setup packard bell in the knoppmyth lirc set up, it never works. I can usually ./configure, make, make install lirc, for this in a few steps. replace the .lircrc and lircd.conf add the stuff to /etc/bootmisc.sh and then it works pretty good. now i can't find /usr/src/lirc---

Please tell me a remote that is just about as cheap, but that works better for mythtv with little set up.

If you can do that maybe you also know how to get that remote working and a blaster at the same time, all for pretty cheap.

Thanks
