Hi,

I would like to upgrade the packages on my KnoppMyth R4 box but since the documentation says that you cannot use the debian method:
#apt-get upgrade
or
#apt-get dist-upgrade

I was wondering if there was a script I could write as a replacement that would only upgrade those packages in KnoppMyth which are safe to upgrade.

The script would be along the lines of:
#knoppmyth-upgrade

apt-get install *package1*
apt-get install *package2*

Seems simple enough, the hard part is determining which packages can be installed without destroying the KnoppMyth box.

If you have recently used apt-get to install a *specific package* on your KnoppMyth box and are confident that it does not have any unintended side effects, please post those here as a response to this thread.

I will try them out and try to create a simple script that upgrades only those packages for which it is safe. For example:

If I do a download only upgrade (not installed) I see the following packages are "upgradeable".

apache apache-common apt apt-show-versions apt-utils aptitude cloop-utils
dialog dump dvgrab e2fsprogs fceu-sdl fontconfig fvwm gdm gksu iproute lftp
libapache-mod-ssl libdbi-perl libgda2-1 libgda2-common libkrb53 libldap2
libquicktime-dev libquicktime1 librsvg2-2 libsasl7 libsdl-console
libsdl-gfx1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2 libsdl-net1.2 libsdl-perl libsdl-ttf2.0-0
libsdl1.2-dev libsdl1.2debian libxft2 libxmltv-perl libxrender-dev
libxrender1 libxslt1 lilo lynx mindi ntp-simple php4 php4-mysql pppconfig
python python2.2 render-dev samba samba-common svgalibg1 synaptic tasksel
vim vorbis-tools webmin-core wireless-tools xbase-clients xfsdump
xlibmesa-gl-dev xlibmesa-glu-dev xlibs xlibs-data xlibs-dev xmltv xmltv-gui
xmltv-util

Anyone else interested in this project?

Post your replys!

don't know when this was posted, but xmltv will break things if updated now.

actually let me qualify that, if you are using tvgrab-na which is north america. Europeans you are probably still safe for now.

The big problem is predicting breakage risk.

- xmltv used to be a safe and even required upgrade for R4V2 after a format change in the US listings broke the previous version. At the moment it's not a good idea because they've rearranged the config files.

- xine-ui used to be a relatively painless enhancement if you wanted menu support for your DVDs, but at the moment there's a nasty dependancy snafu which requires some fiddling around.

Not to mention that an incautious apt-get has always been a good way to hose your system.

I suspect that the script would end up being a maintenance nightmare.

yes and the worst part of it all is that apt-get should be a great utility, In my pure debian systems I don't have any of these problems, but when you base on knoppix with the 200 line sources.list things like this happen.

oh well maybe that will get worked out down the road.
