If I want to play a DVD and watch it on a front-end, do I have to use the DVD player in the back end, the front end or either?

Front end. It just fires up mplayer (or whatever you've selected as your DVD viewer) with the appropriate settings. You may discover that mplayer doesn't really work all that well for this, in which case I'd urge you to read these threads:
