i ripped a DVD in 'perfect' quality and ended up with a 5.5 GB .vob file.

ripped a second DVD with 'excellent' quality and ended up with 1.1 GB A

Can someone provide an example transcode command line that I can use to create a smaller lower quality file avi file from an existing vob file

thanx

I don't know about transcode, but I use mencoder a lot. I don't have a clue if this is better or worse than other methods, but it works for me.

Here's an example I used to crunch a movie recorded with a PVR-250 into an avi file. I bet if you insert the path to your vob file it would work. I tweak the vbitrate setting until I get an avi that's just under 700mb so it'll fit on a cd.

Code:
mencoder  /tv/pretty/Ice_Age.mpg  -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=600:vhq:vqmin=2:vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01 -vop scale -zoom -xy 320 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=96 -o IceAge.avi
