i ripped a DVD in 'perfect' quality and ended up with a 5.5 GB .vob file.

Can someone provide an example transcode command line that I can use to create a smaller lower quality file avi file from an existing vob file

I don't know about transcode, but I use mencoder a lot. I don't have a clue if this is better or worse than other methods, but it works for me.

Here's an example I used to crunch a movie recorded with a PVR-250 into an avi file. I bet if you insert the path to your vob file it would work. I tweak the vbitrate setting until I get an avi that's just under 700mb so it'll fit on a cd.

Nah, I write them to cd to play on my laptop. I have to travel for business sometimes to non-english speaking countries and can't stand to watch cnn after work.
