 Post subject: Live TV Freezes

I'm running R4 and when watching TV the picture freezes. I've checked diskspace, memory, and the logs. Nothing really helps me figure out causes the issue from the logs. The symtoms seem to be about 30-40 minutes after a clean reboot the TV runs fine then freezes during live tv only. It seems to freeze up after 10-15 minutes after the first freeze. The box will stay up fine for over 40 hours if live TV isn't running. I can ssh in and kill mythtvbackend and restart and it seems fine.


I've seen some strange errors in a xterm window waying "BAD File Descriptors". My hardware is a Nvidia card and the ATI Wonder tuner. I've replaced memory, harddisk, video cards, and tried various distributions and I always have the same problem with live tv freezing. KnoppMyth seems to be the most stable so far. Let me know if you need more info than what I have provided so far.

The card I'm using is the ATI All in Wonder Pro VE Tuner. My settings from the modules.conf file are below. I had to add the options bttv line because the auto dection didn't pick up the right card.

post-remove bttv rmmod tuner

looks like all that was added to the /etc/modutils/bttv file. note that knoppmyth by default sets the tuner cards up in /etc/modutils/KnoppMyth and the corresponding files in /etc/mythtv/modules.

I did notice this line which is odd since you only have one card it sould be char-major-81-0, then agian it's not a module either.

Check the disk space available in your live cache. If the cache limit is set above this it will cause freezing issues.

Based on the fact it is very consistent in a time base I would guess this is your problem.

5000MB != 5GB

I decided to try new hardware and purchased a PVR 250. I have to compliment the guys for creating such a beautiful dist. that works almost flawlessly from installation except the freeze up is the same issue. I am having the same issues with the frontend freezing up but I'm receiving new errors now that may help solve the problem. I was able to get a message that says prebuffering pause followed by "Waited 2 seconds for data to be come available" on the xterm window running the frontend. I searched Gossamer-threads.com and found there seems to be a patch that was applied in October that fixes the issue in the CVS. Not sure which version we are running on R4?

Cesman, I did a clean install with the pvr 250 but I understand you've had a lot of success running the same card? I haven't changed any parameters except for the xmltv issues putting the space in the Zaplistings.PM file. The hardware is still the same for the sound - sb live and the Nividia graphics card. Is there any suggestions that you have to troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks for the persistence and the post for the new ivtv drivers. I still am receiving the frontend freeze up and the new drivers seem to make Live TV jump and flicker but sound seems to be okay while this occurs. Here are the new errors from the mythbackend.log. The good news is I think Xsecrets suspected DMA issues and the logs seem to provide the good news to help pinpoint the issue.
