Post subject:  Recording with DirecTV - channel switches when recording

I just got my DirecTV system install this past weekend. After fixing a few problems with my MythTV installation, I can now record shows (the recorder was failing earlier).

My question is this: From all appearances when I was testing out the recording this morning, I set MythTV to record a specific channel, but MythTV ends up recording whatever channel the DirecTV receiver is set to. Another nice feature: If I switch channels, the channel on my recording also switches. I have the receiver hooked up to my computer through s-video out and the audio-out options on the back of the receiver. The receiver is hooked up to my TV through coax cable.

Am I missing something obvious that I need to be doing in order to record the channels that I want to? It seems pretty dumb that I would have to have the receiver set to the specific channel that I want to record. Kind of defeats the whole idea of recording the show in the first place! :?

There are various ways to change the channels.
Mostly they are handled through scripts called via the Tuner setup, depending on your install and hardware they have to be setup somewhat specific to that.

e.g.
I have Dish Network and use IR Blasters (IR Emitters) to change the channels via an installed script.
Here is a set of instructions over on the Wiki. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... hSetTopBox

Since you are talking Direct TV some of those devices have a Serial port that is accessible, there is a discussion running on here about using that, but also you may be able to search over on the wiki as well.

Either place works and Search is your friend.

There are enough people using these I am sure someone has solved the issue. Sorry I couldn't be more specific someone will probably add in though.
