Hi, I'm pretty new to linux but I just bought the following to make a tivo box with (my brother knows some linux so he'll set it up). anyways, if it ever crashes, I'm screwed since I don't know much about linux and despite my attempts to watch what he does, I still don't understand it all. Is there a way to make a backup of a fresh install of MythTV on knoppmyth, like norton ghost does for windows? So i could just put a dvd-r in and make it all good as new with no probs. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, should this be a good setup with minimal to no probs?

Looks like all your hardware is supported out the box! All you really need to do is run mythbackup(maybe once a week). If the system crashes, reinstall using Auto Upgrade. You can also do a search on freshmeat.netfor ghost. .

thanks man, yeah it looks like this can be a badass box. for around 450 bucks total. i ordered an epox m-ATX board at first, and discovered it had KM400 chipset. Lucky i ordered from newegg. I'll be returning that soon.

and for that matter since you are familiar with ghost the recent versions will work on ext2/3 volumes that mythtv uses, so you could back it up with ghost.

I've done a drive image with a preconfigured 'vanilla' (virgin) install that I have restored from many times. The advantage of doing it this way is you can restore in fewer steps and somwhat less time. The disadvantage is you don't get up to date backups that mythbackup would give you (unless you saved those on another system or location - not sure how mythbackup works - then restore after re-imaging).

I have been using Symantec's Ghost Corporate Edition v8, but I am sure that any imaging software will do. Be sure to image all, some imaging software won't grab things from Linux systems unless you tell them too (like boot sectors). Some imaging softwares display this feature differently, in Ghost it is in options on the client software.

I know this is an old thread but I saved my butt recently with Acronis True Image (http://www.acronis.com). It was a classic, STUPID mistake typing too quickly and when I meant to type "rm *.tmp" it came out "rm * .tmp". Stupidity aside I had just made a complete backup of the system on a Firewire drive using True Image. I restored the whole partition in minutes and was back in business.

You may want to look into Mondo Rescue:

This allows you to backup to bootable CD's. It is pretty flexible with lots of restore options. May take a little time to install and work out but it's well worth it. There are Debian packages for it which make installing a lot easier.
