I have a problem with some ripped videos using xine. It seems to shrink the vertical look of the screen producing short fat people. It's not an extreme shink, but it makes it hard to watch the video.

This does not happen on all videos.

So, I have been STF for a couple of days trying to find a fix. But I have been so overwhelmed with lingo I don't understand, I am at a loss as to what to do next.

I tried this http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13219 but it did not give the desired effect. and i tried a few others that were on the knoppmyth wiki.

Here are my specs:

Nvidia 5700 FX LE (default drivers) with DVI output connected to TV via DVI input

Sony KDP-51WS550 51" Widescreen HDTV

Capabilities:

480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i
DVI, S-Video and Component video input.
ATSC (8VSB terrestrial)
(what those means is beyond me.)

Also, I can't get the GUI to fit on the screen either. It seems as though it is stretched out just like the videos. Which leads me to believe that it's just a resolution issue.

Here is some lines from my /var/log/Xorg.log I recognized this from another post I read.

Code:

It's only validating 2 modes...

And here is my xorg.conf Monitor section:

Here's the problem:

Code:
NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 800 x 600

That isn't a widescreen mode.

Try these, which work on my SONY

ModeLine "ATSC-720-59.94p" 74.1 1280 1320 1376 1648 720 722 728 750

ModeLine "ATSC-1080-59.94i" 74.2 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125 interlace

Right now, I'm running in 720 exclusively. I output all video and the GUI as 720. This resolves a problem where it wouldn't switch between 720 and 1080 properly, causing sizing problems.

My TV is a KP65WV700 (65" CRT RPTV, "WV series").
I'm connected via VGA, using a VGA-to-Component box. DVI doesn't work well with the older RPTVs, and mine wouldn't sync correctly via DVI.

Sounds like an "aspect ratio" (search term) problem stretching 4:3 to 16:9...

I have the KP-51WS500, not sure how it compares to yours. I am using the EDID data from the TV with some adjustments to the Height/Width/Offsets in Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> Appearance -> Screen Settings. For reference: Width - 1182, Height - 682, X offset - 46, Y offset - 17. This is connected to my 6150 chipset via DVI -> DVI, and I used nvidia-settings from an Xterm in the GUI to let the nVidia utility configure my XF86Config-4 file (I'm still on R5D1). This is with the 9629 driver. (I use those settings because when it comes to modeline particulars, I'm dumber than mud)

Try playing with other nVidia drivers/nvidia-settings. I am using Xine for video playback and have not noticed the shrinkage you refer to. Also look into thornsoft and tjc's suggestions.

Ok, I understand the Modeline thing.

Do I just add in the lines at the bottom of the monitor section?

I did that and rebooted, no change that i can see.

Do I need to do something else too?

They go up with the other modelines, and you have to then reference them down in the "Screen" / "Display" section.
ex:

Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Card0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    16

    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       16
        Modes       "ATSC-720-60p"  #"ATSC-1080-59.94i"  "800x600"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Here, you see that I'm only allowing one modeline. Everything past the # is commented-out.

Also, look at the x log after rebooting, and watching something. See what modelines are validated, and what the virtual screen size is.

Your default depth is 24. That may work, but mine is only happy at 16.
You have two 24 sections. There should be one. The first one doesn't have my modeline.
I'm not surprised that it doesn't work!

Edit it to have just one 24 section. If it doesn't work, try it at 16. Look at the x log to see if your modelines are valid or not.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

It worked in 720 24 depth

That did it. And with a few tweaks in screen settings. I got the GUI centered too. I noticed right away when VNC came in as wide screen.

I am dumb. That is why it did not work the first few times.

Videos rock too!! WOOT...

Now that i have a clue, I will dable in 1080. I remember a log about it and i think I can get it to work.

I will post if it happens.

Again, thanks MUCH. Have a great weekend.

Now I'd like to throw a wrench into this. I would like to make a change, this way I can have 1 less remote floating around.

currently I am running my video card DVI to the TV's DVI. I bought an adapter that will allow me to convert my video card DVI to component video so that I can connect via my receiver instead.

I know it is not as good, but it makes things easier for the family.

So, right now I have this code in my xorg.conf

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "ATSC-720-59.94p"
EndSubSection

I think that the ATSC needs to be changed for component video to work. Right now I get a 51" blank screen. lol

Any ideas?

The solution is:
Logitech Harmony 880
Recently $139, listed at techbargains.com
My family loves it. They can watch Myth, the old DVD player, VCR, XBox, the STB, and TiVo. They're all on different inputs. Nobody knows, or cares, what inputs do what. The Harmony figures it all out.

Or any of the Harmony remotes. We use a Harmony 688 (I don't believe they are still in production, see http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/remot ... /&cl=us,en for their current offerings), and the family loves it.

If you are intent on changing your connections/xorg.conf, see http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-d.html and http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-h.html . Look for the "TVOutFormat" option.

Good move!

Sure! But realize that the Harmony mimics other remotes. So you have to have an existing remote/receiver setup.
I had a StreamZap (works with Myth, out of the box) controlling Myth, with the StreamZap IR Receiver.
I just told the Harmony that I had MythTV. It asked if I had a remote for it. It asked to learn a few codes. After 3-4, it knew the rest. Voila!
