Never used MythPhone before. Just signed up for FreeWorldDialup.

I'm going to be travelling a bit, and would like to be able to videocall home, see the wife and daughter!

Not super technical with Linux, so am wondering if there are any webcams out there that "just work" with Knoppmyth.. as in, drivers are there, just plug it in and video and audio will be recognized.

Seems like a good thing to know before I spend $!! Unfortunately, when one searches on a specific camera name (i.e., QuickCam 9000) one usually finds all the discussions about what went wrong.

Not looking to recompile the kernel, here. Am I offbase here? IS there a working USB Camera ready-to-go?

I just ordered from newegg:
WEBCAM LOGITECH|QUICKCAM MSGER WH % - OEM (Qty=1, Price=$19.99)

Because many of the reviewers said it worked "plug and play" with many different variants of Linux.

When it comes, I'll post how it goes. For 20 bucks, it would be real winner.

Hi,

I know the Logitech Omni works, haven't made the p/t part work yet (haven't tried either) but did try several other "various" flavors without any success. They were id'd but not assigned to a video. If it will work in phone, it will also work in motion.

Well, the webcam came, plugged it in while mythfrontend was open (in a combined frontend/backend box) and nothing showed up on the phone screen.

I rebooted with the camera attached, and the boot failed saying that /sbin/modprobe had provided an error. The text dump preceding that message seemed to show that it saw the camera there.

But there is no question: KnoppMyth R5F27 *will not boot* if this camera is attached. Unplugging and rebooting gets the system running again.

So I'm at a loss.

It's a cool-seeming feature, if I could ever get it working. Would love any links or help others can share!

Hi,

Yep, that is about how it works. Unplug the usb cam before boot. Once up, and IF you have a tuner card it then the video may appear as video1. open an xterm, plug in camera, wait a couple of seconds then do dmesg. You should see all the pooh about the camera and IF it is happy with it, it will display what video it has assigned to it. video0 or video1 etc.

In your phone setup, you will need to set the video to be 0, 1 or what ever it reported. Use arrow keys <- / ->

If it does not have a video assigned then it won't work.

That same video connection is what is used for motion /etc/motion/motion.conf

I have not had much luck with the "cheap" cameras.

many version ago i had a cheap logitech webcam setup and working with motion.

I could bott w/ the cam plugged in or not, but as above, this had an impact on the assignment of the video devices.

cam plugged in at boot -> cam = video0, capture card = video1
cam not plugged at boot -> cam = video1 and capture card = video0

so once you pick a schema, stick to it or the camera and the capture card will be broken.

Took me a while to figure out why myth couldnt change channels on video0 (it was teh webcam)

Sounds like it is important to use a webcam that DOESN'T use /dev/videoX as a default, because it conflicts to the more important PVR cards. Is it possible that maybe /etc/modprobe.conf can be configured to change the default device for the camera?

Are there any cameras that use some other device as a default, like /dev/cameraX?

Hi,

As khrusher mentions that once you are setup, just tow the line and all is well. If you have an cheep 150 card that has the bttv 878 chip, then you could plug in any normal camera / camcorder / video.

That wasn't the original question.

All I know is the Logitech Omni works for me and I don't switch in / out at boot.

OK, I did as mjl said... booted, then plug in camera, then wait a bit, then type "dmesg" in a terminal window. I saw a bunch of stuff that was clearly related to the last boot, such as discovering all the cards, then this:

So that's a thinker.

This camera was chatted up a bit on newegg as being "linux campatible" with lots of posts on working with with various distros. Not sure what to do from here.

Why not set up a udev rule to prevent that from happening? If you search for "udev sucks" :) you can find info on how to do this. Seriously... "udev sucks"

I noticed (at the following link) that the WEBCAM LOGITECH|QUICKCAM MSGER is listed as "not supported"... Post on craigslist?

I think there is a difference between "supported" and "compatible". I read "compatible" to mean that the company may not be making any effort, but due to the specifics of the hardware, firmware, etc... it might work anyway. But if you call them, don't expect support.

So when I saw the thing listed and rated 5 eggs on Newegg, with all the comment that it worked in Linux and naming linux drivers that recognized it... for the price I figured it was worth the risk.

Well, you inspired me to run off to Walmart and I bouoght a brand new "Logitech Quickcam Coommunicate STX Plus" for $45.

Now, I get the EXACT SAME SYMPTIOMS as you! Same kernel Oops. Won't boot with the camera plugged in, etc.

Thinking...

Hi,
After all the chatter, it should tell where it is assigned..
usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 9
usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
pwc: Philips webcam module version 10.0.12-debian loaded.
pwc: Supports Philips PCA645/646, PCVC675/680/690, PCVC720[40]/730/740/750 & PCVC830/840.
pwc: Also supports the Askey VC010, various Logitech Quickcams, Samsung MPC-C10 and MPC-C30,
pwc: the Creative WebCam 5 & Pro Ex, SOTEC Afina Eye and Visionite VCS-UC300 and VCS-UM100.
pwc: Logitech QuickCam Orbit/Sphere USB webcam detected.
pwc: Registered as /dev/video1.

This is on R5F1 so the chatter mileage may very.
