Post subject:  Analog Fall back?

I currently have a FE/BE system with a PVR150 and PVR500, and I am thinking of adding on a hdhomerun. My question is, if the dual tuners are in use on the hdhomerun, is there a means in KM to "fallback" to analog tuners and record the show via the analog tuners?

I have situations where all three tuners are in use, but would like to record everything in HD or digital primarily, only using the analog as a last resort.

I hope this make sense.
Thanks

I think there are other ways of assigning tuner priority, but the way I do it is: the first one you set up in mythtv-setup will be the first one used, the second will be the second, etc.

So when you're setting up tuners, do it in the order you'd like them used. In your case, set up the HDHomeRun ones first, then your PVRs, and they will be used as "fallbacks."

In mythtv-setup under Input Connections on the second screen for a given connection you can set a priority.

Sorry, I guess I was not clear, or maybe I am not understanding. For example FOX in my area is channel 9(analog), channel 9.1 (HD). If I set a show to record on Channel 9.1, but all of the HD tuners are busy. Will mythtv use one of my analog tuners, and record the show on channel 9? I don't actually own a hdhomerun yet, so I am unable to experiment.

Yes it will. If you have the program set to record on any channel and not a specific one.

No. If you "set it to record on 9.1", then it will only record
on 9.1. If you set it to record on any channel, then you set
the priorities of the analog channels to be lower than the
digital channels, then you'll get the behavior you want. There
may be a tuner priority scheme also (I don't know, I use
channel priorities).

For stations that broadcast the same thing in digital HD and
digital SD on two different (sub)channels, you might want to
set the HD channels to be higher priority than the SD ones (if
you prefer HD when there's a choice).

Sometimes I do the opposite, so the recording takes up less space.

Yup, before I could playback HD, I increased priority of SD
sub-channels in order to avoid transcoding whenever possible.
Now that I can play back HD, I prefer the HD sub-channels --
not so much because of the definition, but because of the
aspect ratio. Watching shows that got letter-boxed in SD
broadcasts and then pillar-boxed when displayed on a 16:9
display is annoying. Yes, I know you can zoom, but it's easier
to just record the 16:9 version instead of the 4:3 letterboxed
version.

Thanks for all the input -- Now off to find a hdhomerun.
