For Christmas I'm getting a new computer! Well, it's someone's old one, but it'll be a upgrade for the family "Myth Box"! We all love it!

What do I need to do to preserve the list of recordings from the old box? How do I initialize the new box so it won't record those episodes? Don't need to move any media, just the database bits. Thanks! Merry Christmas!

Here's my idea, others may have better.
  1. On the old PC run a mythbackup from the Knpppmyth menu.
  2. Attach the old drive to the new PC.
  3. Boot some sort of 'live' distro.
  4. Partition the new drive
    1. first a / partition -- 5Gb seems typical,
    2. second a SWAP partition -- 2Gb is what I have.
    3. third, a /myth partition -- use the rest of the drive.
  5. format that third partition as xfs or ext3.
  6. mount the OLD disk's 3rd partition
  7. mount the NEW disk's 3rd partition
  8. rsync all files from the OLD to the NEW
(this pulls the DB backup and any recordings/videos if they havn't been deleted)
  9. remove the OLD drive, and boot the pc with the KM install CD.
  10. Select "Auto Upgrade"

you MUST use the same, exact hostname as before.

If you're comfortable with MySQL, you might be able to backup and restore just the recorded table, but I'm not sure the best steps there.

You can copy the db relatively easily. I've done it several times myself. Copying the media takes time - especially if you have a large hdd or a few ripped .iso's.

I would've posted instructions, but I can't find the link. I'm sure someone will come by and give the correct information shortly.

good luck.

Very true. You can still follow my instructions but instead of rsync, copy .../backup/mythconverg.sql.gz from the old drive to the new (3rd partition) make a backup directory on the new drive.

I was suggesting rsync, because it only copies what's there, so if the recordings and videos HAVE been deleted then it's not significantly slower than just copying the backup files. if any recordings and videos HAVE NOT been deleted then the rsync method keeps the new DB happy and keeps the files available.

You can see how I moved to a R5F27 machine to a R5.5 here:
