Post subject:  Index of graysky's HOWTO guides-shameless self-promotion :)

I was answering a post the other night and referenced one of my HOWTO guides which kinda got me thinking: how many of these have I written? I did the search and found that the answer was nearly 30! I decided to put together an index of them in one thread... a bit shameless I know, but here we are! Most of these are self-explanatory based on the titles.

Note that I have will be updating these guides to work with R6 once it goes final and supersedes R5.5. (Don't worry, I won't delete the originals, but I will offer both in the same post).

If you see a lightbulb icon ( ) in front of the link, it has been re-written or written to work with R6. If you see an exclamation mark ( :!: ) in front of the guide, it *should* be of a general nature be applicable w/ R6 albeit, the commands will need to be converted over to the R6 syntax (such as pat-get --> pacman -S or /etc/init.d/samba restart --> sudo sv restart smbd nmbd, etc.) Please PM me if you feel otherwise.

Not full-blown HOWTO guides, but a little tidbit

Restarting Samba under R6
Burning an ISO from the shell (or an ssh session)
Improving system responsiveness

HOWTO: Enable jumbo frames to speed-up file-xfers on your LAN - If you have Giglan hardware (1000 Mbps NICs) that support jumbo frames (and a switch), you can probably get a bit more bandwidth out of your LAN.

:!: XFS Speed Hints-Measure % fragmentation and defrag your XFS partition
:!: XFS Maintenance - read if you're new to XFS

Secure Communications
:!: HOWTO: Secure vnc or mythweb via ssh tunnels to keep your box hacker-free - MUST READ if you plan to access your KM box from outside your LAN or if your home LAN is wireless!

HOWTO: Speed-up sshd authentication
:!: HOWTO: Turn on your mythtvbox remotely via WOL (Wake On Lan)

nothing wrong with that. You deserve credit for your contributions. It is the kind of thing that makes this community work.

I do quite a number over at for SME server as well. Including a mythtv integration to that server.

How-to's really help people get started even if their situation is different.

Can we get this pinned or possibly converted to wiki articles?

This is great work and a tribute to your efforts.

Hi graysky!

Always nice to have a list of handy things around. Thank you for putting them all in one spot as there were a couple I had forgotten about! :)

I for one, appreciate your work. I suspect many others do also.

You hit the nail on the head. This is the major driver for me spending the time to write up the guides. It's nice to know folks are actually using them too :)

Just wanted to let the community know that I will be updating these guides (well some of them) for use with R6. See the first thread of the post for details. I'll be updating it over the next few weeks so check back if interested.
